Just bought a boat and need a little help setting it up. Added a trolling motor over the weekend but haven’t bought a battery yet. What size do you recommend?

14ft boat with goodies like decking and a livewell.

    thanks!

I am thinking that you will need two deep cycle 12 volt batteries for the job.
Price range and size depends somewhat on your pocket book, you can spend from $75 to $300 per copy.
    Hope this helps.
Oh and don’t forget you will need a charger, they vary in price and size too.

Measure the space you will be placing the battery, then get the largest one that will fit in that space.

I have a Lund S16 and run a 30 lbs that I got. I have a group 27 Interstate battery. I have gone with the “cheaper” batteries before but they end up costing more in the long run. Get a high quality battery with a maker that stands behind there product. It may be a lot for an Interstate but it is better than buying a battery every two years that is cheap quality.

The biggest battery you can fit, always nice to have extra.
I have bought my last 2 deep cycles from fleet farm for under 75$ and have had good luck

If you have room, certainly entertain 2 12 volts.
One for starting and accessories (live well, sonar/gps, lights)
and one for the trolling motor.
Size 27’s are okay, 29’s are better, and guessing you won’t have room for series 31’s.
I guess for me it’s, I am really relying on my battereis so i go with top brands versus cheaper models, but that’s just me.

The biggest that will fit. Not sure if they’re still there, but Fleet Farm recently had dual purpose Group 31s for 95 bucks. And I think they were pretty close in size to Group 29s. Sure looked similiar to me. My buddy got one for his 14-foot boat and so far it’s worked well. He uses it for both starting and trolling. If you’re gonna use one battery for both, my understanding is you should get a dual purpose.

On my 14 foot boat I put in a size 24. Doesn’t take up much room and is not too heavy. It throws that boat around. Couple that with a good on-board charger (I went with sealed Guest automatic) which will make you keep it topped off more often. That has worked very well for me. I take short trips. If you tend to fish for long periods of time you may benefit from a larger battery.

I should have mentioned that there is already one battery in place for starting, lights, bilge, etc. This will be in addition and primary purpose is for the trolling motor.

thanks for all the great advice

Made a decision on it tonight.

Agree with the advice on quality. I share operating costs on a friends boat for Rainy Lake trips. After having multiple issues with “cheap” batteries I wanted quality. Size 27 seemed to be about right too.

Was killing time online tonight and what do you know the internet has hot deals Cabelas had their Size 24 AGM battery for $100 which is almost half price.

Reviews seem really good and this size should be sufficient for the intended use. Can’t get everything you want and am running out of rigging money quickly on the new boat

Oh well, I’m happy and can’t wait to put it to use.

I highly recommend a good automatic charger.
