OK, I was digging around in the shed last weekend and found a 40 lb. LP tank with the old, non OPD valve on it. It’s empty. Dang!. Rather than tossing it out with the rest of the scrap metal, can a person, (legally), use it as a portable compressed air tank? Use it for inflating flat tires, etc…? I would paint it a different color with labeling, etc….The safety valve issue is what concerns me. Hate to have the FW’s car explode. Just sayin.
    Thoughts?

I wouldn’t do that. I don’t believe propane tanks are made to hold higher pressures. You can get the valve replaced to use it for propane.

YES – U can make an air tank out of it

I got a 100 lb one that I have used for 30 years, NO issues

    fill 125 – 150 lbs of air

works GREAT for blowing dirt out of my dozer’s and filling tires

    propane tanks are weight related

20lbs – 40lbs – 100lbs is the weight when full of propane not AIR psi.

Yup, used them many times on the farm. I always wondered how many psi it COULD hold.

Make sure the tank has aired out for a few days and to be safe purge it with compressed air too before welding on the tank.

I work with propane tanks at work safety blow off on a normal propane valve is 350psi. just air it out for a couple of days if your going to weld on it.

FYI… Found a little info thanks to google.

Burst pressure by law: 960 psi
    Working pressure: 240 psi

Still not a fan, but is well within the safety factor.

Did they mandate the 40 lbers have to have the new fitting now too ?? I know when it came about years ago, 20lb and smaller had the have the newer filler ????
