So I am starting to get the itch to buy a boat in the next year or so. Through considerations with people I know who fish quite a bit and trust I am looking to start with a used 16-17′ Fiberglass tiller. That’s where I need your help, I know the Ranger 680T is a very sought after boat as are a couple Skeeter models but beyond that I have no idea where to start…

Does anyone on here have recommendations on which boats I should be considering? Yar-Craft? Warrior? Tuffy? I am likely looking to spend $8,000 or less, which isn’t a large budget. Any help is much appreciated!

I dont know much about fiberglass but I do know that there are a TON of those Warrior (Falcons is it??) White, red, and black early to mid 90’s tillers out there that would be right in your pricerange.

Make sure you look the boat over with a fine tooth comb. A couple musts are a test ride and to make there are no cracks in the transom. Older glass boats had wood transoms in them that can become waterlogged and weak if not taken care of. Take your time and look at many boats. Good luck.

I bought a 16 foot Yarcraft with a 4 stroke (non-EFI) this spring. I had looked for a long time and absolutely – be careful of rotten wood. Best advice is to take it to a dealer that sells that brand and have them inspect it. If solid, I think fiberglass boats that size are a dryer and more comfortable ride than the 17-18 foot aluminum boats I have had in the past. Best thing is I can take my size boat in smaller lakes and rivers, yet I can turn around and take it to Mille Lacs on most days without a problem. Very versatile size boat – IF – its fiberglass.

Look every morning at the listings. If you see a boat you like call and email right away if you can. They sell insanely fast right now. Its a sellers market.

As for taking the boat to a dealership to have it looked at, in theory that’s a good idea. But so many people are clamoring for used boats right now the seller has the upper hand and may not want the hassle.

I just sold my Skeeter 1790t. I offered to take the guy who bought it out for a ride but he said starting it with muffs would be good enough.

If the guy insisted on taking it to a dealership to have it checked out I would have thanked him for his time and called the next guy on the list.
