ELK RIVER — A 46-year-old man has died after suffering an electrical shock while trying to charge a boat battery on Eagle Lake.

Sherburne County Sheriff Joel Brott says Daniel Peterson, of Big Lake, was standing in about 20 inches of water when he lost his footing and fell into the water while he was holding the battery charger, which was plugged into a socket.

His 49-year-old sister Kris Biser ran into the water to help but she was also shocked.

Neighbors found the two floating in the lake. They pulled the electrical cord from the socket and pulled the two out. They rendered first aid and called 911.

Biser was taken to St. Cloud Hospital and she’s expected to recover.

According to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s office, Peterson died Saturday.

    Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Remember back in the day when you would see a smoker filling their gas tanks?

Some things just don’t mix, electricity & water is an example.

That’s why i always use a cord with a built in GFCI. Always error on the side of caution.

Not to sound heartless, but I wonder if they shocked up some fish?

I am pretty sure had I not curiously asked the question he would be coming back from the dead.

It is sad that one lapse of judgment can cost you so much, R.I.P.

I’m sure the guy thought it was no big deal to walk through some shallow water to get the charger to his boat. He probably never considered falling an option. I may have done the same thing, many probably would. Its a sad reminder of how fragile our lives can be.

Well, that is one bit of stupid that can’t be fixed.

It’s sad but an easy (but grave) mistake to make. Could have been avoided by hooking up the charger to the battery prior to plugging it in. I see people do it in reverse all the time.

I run a cord down my dock all the time. I plug it in to the socket last.
