I have a line question guys. Dad is headed to Nipigon for Lake Trout and is looking for line advice. He will be down rigging using the 8’3″ Shimano Compre trolling rods. Diawa Sealine 27 line counters. He is thinking he wants a braid. I am not so sure. Advice? Thoughts? Grant Sorenson or any other Laker guys out there? Advice is appreciated.

I have always used 20lb Big Game on my riggers.

I would use 20 pound mono. The trout up there can be very large and a typical great lakes salmon outfit would work well.
I am not sure but small diamater braids may dig into the spool on large fish.

    Hope your dad has fun.

Wade, I know a lot of Capt. down here have switched to braid on lake MI. I quit trolling for them about 20 years ago and all I use is 20# braid on my spinning gear when jigging to 130fow with hair jigs and blades

All of our Lake Superior trolling rods are spooled with 14 pound Vanish. We used 17 pound until a couple years ago and found the 14 to be just fine.

If he is fishing deep water, i would suggest braid. By deep, i mean over 120 feet or so. If he is shallower, id say mono.

Big game is nice line but it does have a lot of stretch for a mono line. I like 14 or 16 in the xl or xt. Yes i have caught plenty of big lakers over 20 pounds on 12 as well.

The way those big lakers hit and thrash, shallow with a braid you may pull hooks easier. I would feel more comfortable with a momo line.

Great choice on the rods too, those things are my favorite.

Oh yeah, and remember, you can never have too big of a lure for lake trout
