You didn’t stop fishing, did you?
We fished for another 30min or so. My little guy was worried about me. Anyway its hard to fish with a #5 shad rap in one palm.
Ah. Was there another adult with? Didn’t want to try the super braid yank trick? I guess I don’t blame you with a little one involved.
Hook a piece of line to it and around the steering wheel and jerk. It will get easier the second time.

Just me and the little guy
Had this happen to me a few years back. Had another gal with me on a Sunday. Had to load the boat back onto the trailer myself, take it home, back it into the garage, and then drive to a Hospital 16 miles from where I live. And then the Doctor on call had the nerve to say ” caught a sucker huh” When i got home I hooked onto the boat again and went back to fishing.
Hastings MN…ON THE RIVER.
Doc tried to cut a treble with a toe nail clipper. Finally after I suggested asking a maintenance person for a side cutter, a fella in blue greasy coveralls came into the ER with a old rusty set.
True story.
Pulled one out of myself this winter while my buddy was turning white. It is kind of hard to tell yourself you are going to yank it out on the count of three when you know you are going to yank it out on the count of two. Pulled one out of my Dad the day before. The string trick really does work great.

I see you smashed down the barbs, that should’ve made it easier,
Must just be the picture. The barbs where still up.

A good life lesson…it’s better to yank it our early on 2 than late on 4
Here’s a terrible video of how to use the string trick. But it’s slow and that’s why I picked it to post here.
I would have used longer (and stronger) fishing line, toss out the pen and just hold the fishing line in my hand. With longer line, I would have been a much faster jerk and the fella with the hook in his had wouldn’t have felt a thing.
Call me naive but does this whole string trick really necessary? I have never hooked myself all the way in like that before but working with wood for a decade now I have had some pretty nasty splinters go through both ends of the fingers, out through the nail, many others, and a good hold on some pliers and a coworker to rip em out always works. Can’t the same be done with a hook? Yes there is a barb but to go through all the trouble with string and ice seems a bit overkill.
Rip that stupid thing out throw on some duct tape and call her good.
One little trick from an old fart that has done this a few times—–use a hard line and not mono. The stretch in the mono makes it much harder where with a hard line the hook is out before you have time to swear
I think on the Scatter Rap Challenge Joel N had this same accident. I think there is also a video of getting it released.

Real men don’t use ice.
You can do this with a pliers instead of string. You should press down the eye of the hook towards the barb of the point that is embedded. You need to secure the affected area so it does not move when you pull on the hook. I had a hook in me last month. I was in my index finger and I was alone at the time. It was too difficult to keep my hooked arm steady and after a few painful attempts with a pliers, I pushed the hook all the way through and cut the barb and backed it out.
Thats what I’ve done as well… push it through cut if off. It does smart for awhile but not enough to send me off the water.
IMHO,I think a lot more can go wrong with trying to yank it out with pliers.
In talking with the folks that have pushed the hooks the rest of the way through and that I’ve used the string method, the string wins hands down for being painless.
By pressing down on the hook, the barb and point should come out the same hole it went in. That the whole idea around this. For those that need ice…I would suggest using the string method.
Care should be taken when around tendons, major arteries, in the eye’s of course. Best off seeing someone in the ER.
To know which method works best for certain – I think we should do an experiment with consistent variables. Sink two exact hooks into someone’s hand side-by-side and pull one out by pliers and one by braided line. Volunteers?
We could call it the “Skin Flap” challenge
Great idea!
Let’s get Joel Nelson to volunteer!! He’s good at this stuff!
I have done the pliers pull on 2 different people with no complaints. The important thing is to get the hook angle right by pushing the eye of the hook towards the skin so the barb comes out at the same angle as it went in. This is also true with the string method. Also be quick.
