Plastic Bunks Update

Remember my last winter’s project of replacing the carpeted bunks with the recycled plastic boards and no carpeting? Although I’ve not had occasion to get on the water many times this spring, I feel I’ve given them a pretty fair trial run. I gotta say that I think these things are cat’s meow for loading and unloading, both drive on, winch on and slide off situations. The old Warrior slides off like my tin boats did off the roller trailers I had back then. About the only thing I have to remind myself is to leave the winch strap on until I get the trailer wet. Do I recommend the change?? I’ll reserve that until I get a season in using them, get the boat up off the trailer to check for abrasion. For right now though, it’s looking like this project is a winner jerr

That looks pretty dang slick. I have a friend who is building a deck out of the composite stuff over the 4th so there are bound to be scraps. Do thing these would work in the ‘up and down’ position on a smaller boat trailer?

This isn’t the composite lumber. It’s made of recycled plastic bags from places like Wallyworld, no sawdust filler included. This qualifies as a structural lumber where the decking material won’t. They make the permanent lawn furniture out of this stuff jerr

Wasn’t aware of this stuff. Where do you get it? Would it still work for my application? No carpet and no dry rot is perfect in my book!

I have had the opportunity to pull a few glass boats off there trailers, it is amazing how much damage bunks do to glass if they have been used a lot. Most I believe comes from winds, bunks being wet and sand clings to the carpet. Rangers, Warriors, doesn’t mater the brand some have ben so bad the gel coat and paint are gone and down to the glass. Really can`t be seen unless the boat is pulled off the trailer. I have heard of the recycled plastic bunks doing the same thing.

Talk with these people, they should be able to steer you in the right direction. Be aware though, it’s spendy to say the least. I think I paid $6/ft for my 2″x6″ lumber, somewhere around $200 in lumber alone.

As for damage to the bottom of my boat, that’s the reason I went with the plastic. There was so much sand and crud embedded in the carpet, it was like driving on a sheet of sandpaper every time I loaded or unloaded. Not only that but the little bit of movement from hauling it had to be causing more damage. I ended up having to re-gel coat the bunk areas, some places were pretty nasty. jerr

_________ a side note- -another reason to go with the plastic boards is that in this age of invasives, not having the carpeted bunks eliminates one place for them to hide-j

Did you purchase direct from them? How did they ship?,shipping must have been a bit costly.
I wish I had this info 10 months ago when I replaced mine. I used Oak and that wasn’t cheap either.
    Thanks
