For years I have used a site to follow water levels on Lake Zumbro here in SE Minnesota. For all those years the top of the dam’s height was at 920.0 feet and was the benchmark for determining the water levels. I was on the lake yesterday and things seems kosher, but in checking the site this morning to see if over night weather did anything to water levels I see the data now lists the top of the dam at 914.5 feet.

Of course this data comes from a city government website which eplains how they can lose 6 feet of water and not change a thing as far as the lake is concerned. Sounds like somebody accustomed to fixing city/county budget problems was asked to up-date this other site.

    Strange.

It seems that the data for the 920.0 elevation came from a survey done in 1919 when the dam was young. The 914.6 level shown today reflects a current survey using Average Mean Sea Level. Surveying today is much more accurate. Still, 5.4 feet is quite a leap.
