Curious question

Yesterday a customer/friend, who doesn’t fish, (we have a fish date next week) called all excited to tell me he got me a fishing gift. He was working at the farmers market yesterday and one of the ladies had soaps…

She convinced him that this “soap” had a “dirt” scent… Hmmm. For the anglers to prevent their scent from being on the bait.

I’ve never cared about my scent getting on my bait.. But I usually use a crawler and my hands are deep into the dirt scent.

I have weird superstitions for fishing like not touching the line because I think they can feel my heartbeat thru the line.

IM SO CURIOUS IF YOU DO!! I will let you know how it goes next week fishing with my dirt scent. ON!

Not sure what you’ll be fishing for but it’s not uncommon to hear of people using Ivory Soap for channel cats.

I don’t give human scent much thought. It’s not like a fish is conditioned that human scent is bad or good for them. So really, how would they know to eat or stay away from a bait?

I read one article some time ago where the author suggested that flatheads could smell/taste human urine in the water. He went on to say we shouldn’t discard or hang over the side of the boat while flathead fishing.

It was a fun article to read…and that’s about all I thought of it.

The only thing I’ve really ever been concerned with is gasoline getting on my hands and transferred to bait/lures.

That’s why I never wash my hands while fishing to keep the dirt and bait scent on there, just wipe with a towel and I agree with you Coley that they can feel your heartbeat through your line

One time ice fishing with some friends they couldn’t catch a thing even when they fished in my hole. That night we sat and thought about it. They were putting lotion on their hands. The next day they skipped the lotion and caught fish. So I think stuff like soap and lotions do make a difference.

Thanks moxie. We can be the 2 heartbeat fishergals

I agree with the lotion. That stuff would stay on whatever it touches. I use the back of my hands to apply sunscreen.

same theory as many variations of shiny lures on the market …
it doesn’t have to help anglers catch more fish
it only has to help salespersons catch more anglers’ dollars

I have the same superstition to bug spray/bug cream.

I also remember spraying out new cranks with WD-40 in the late 70’s. I am not sure why we did it, but it did not inhibit the fish from striking the cranks.

My Dad was always leaning over and washing his hands off in the lake. To say he caught WAY more fish than me would be an understatement. I think there’s something to it, at least when you’re still fishing with live bait.

When I fish a walleye tourney, I typically like to put a little gasoline in my fellow anglers leech containers Seems to help me

Fishing with my dad and uncles in the early 90s, they would spray all minnows, crawlers, leeches, etc. with WD40 as well to ‘mask human scent’. Weirdos.

It’s the outdoor industry. Believe what you have done or have not done in the past. Everyone is going to have different opinions and thoughts on things. The outdoor industry is SO FULL of followers and foolish people that I bet I could change the appearance on bug spray,, call it a fish attractant and people would buy it and use it and tell their friends how great it is.. No question in my mind about that!

SO, Trust what YOU have had success with in the past.

A good fishing friend and also Psychologist told me he uses latex gloves for applying Sunscreen and any other lotions or bug sprays when he is going fishing.

He said studies have shown the Zinc Oxide/Sun screen chemicals and Deet will deter fish. Says they proved the fish don’t like it and will greatly reduce your bites even with reaction baits.

Since being told I use latex or other plastic gloves for applying lotion/sunscreen and avoid touching my face or other areas covered with lotion.

    My catch rate has improved.

PS: My first question was, what the Heck was he doing with a bulk pack of LATEX Gloves.

Ok, we’re all familiar with the concept of farmer’s tan … so if you’re sunburnt from the fingertips to the wrists and pale or lightly tanned from the wrists up; is that now called Phsycian’s burn?
