Do you guys think he got what he deserved?

Fish Tale Leads to Jail Time

Seeing as he had previously won this contest and many others by (allegedly) cheating in the past I think they should have given him a much bigger fine.

It says they revoked his hunting and fishing privileges in select counties. How does that work?

Doug I’m guessing it was a district judge an only has authority over the counties he presides in. Had he plead guilty to the DNR charge of transporting fish, the DNR could have revoked licensing….my guess.

The humility from his peers is more punishment then what he received in jail time or fines. IMO

It definitely should have been a stiffer fine and more jail. Basically he was trying to steal a $10k Ice Castle….I’m just guessing but if someone just outright stole one or got caught trying to steal one the penalty would be more than 7 days in jail and $275 in fines.

I agree with the judge as well….cheaters like this guy ruin contests and tournaments for those of us that play by the rules.

I agree, If I went to a Ice Castle dealer and stole a house it would be a different story. This was a good oppurtunity to make a very public example that I feel was squandered. Kinda get tired of plea deals.

He got off easy I think. That sentence won’t stop him from violating the laws again.

It’s only cheating if they catch you

I completely disagree. Making a public example of people thru law is immoral. Two wrongs doesn’t make a right. Plea deals are just that, the defendant must give up something in exchange for a lighter sentence. That doesn’t mean he gets off with less than he deserves. There will always be differing opinions about sentencing of criminals, but consistency efficiency (overall cost to the taxpayer versus the benefit), and effectiveness is the goal.

I’d never want to be a judge, that’s for sure.

From what I read he is a “Career Poacher”. Maybe he should have been give a few hundred hours of community time improving fish habitat, cleaning up the lakes, etc…

    Apparently fines aren’t working.

I would also like to see any local contests refuse his entry in the future. I think most tourney’s have some sort of clause allowing them to refuse participants.

Biggill, I’m not saying to go beyond sentancing guidelines, but if somebody’s on the fence about weather to cheat to “steal” a first place prize I’m not sure the possibility of a $250 fine is going to stop them. As far as losing his right to fish for two years I think he’ll probably still do it as rules mean nothing to him. I think they need to be hit where they will feel it, money and freedom.
I could’nt agree more that being a judge would be a diffacult task .

My response was to the comment in general, not this specific case. I like to read responses first once in a while before I even read the story. It gives myself an unbiased point of view of the discussion.

He got off light. People who do this should get more jail time and stiffer fines.
