Does anyone know at what age a used car in MN does not have to pay sales tax anymore?

    Thanks

I am going through this right now, and based on what I found unless you gift the car ( gifting = between parent and child only ) there is no avoiding paying the MN tax man. The state is pretty good about making sure they get their fair share of your sale.

If you do gift the vehicle, you need to submit the gift form signed by both parties and a notary public. The key here is that the value of the vehicle cannot calculate to more than $ 300.00 in tax if it were sold to a private party or it cannot be considered a gift.

At least this is what I have found out so far, if anyone has other experience or thoughts, please pipe in.

Be aware of restriction in buying Collector or other special plates.

    Collector Plates

Any vehicle that’s at least 20 model years old and manufactured after 1935 can display these plates, providing you, the owner, also have at least one other vehicle registered in Minnesota.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How many miles per year may I operate my Collector Vehicle?

Minnesota does not have a mileage restriction for collector class vehicles. Collector vehicles are to be operated only as a “Collector’s Item” and may not be used for general transportation. Generally driving to and from collector events (shows, parades) is acceptable. Check with local Law Enforcement for more specific issues.

Which Vehicles are considered “Classic” Cars?

Minnesota Statute 168.10 identifies cars considered classic.

Basically, collector plates are for special events and to drive it on occasions for the good of the car. Meaning, you cannot use this vehicle for driving to work everyday.

    Good Luck.
