Railroad Ties

Son is thinking about replacing some landscaping at his lake place. Involves removing about 2 dozen railroad ties. Where does a person get rid of these things? Can they be recycled any way?

i have neighbors on the river here in champlin that are paying a disposal fee to get rid of theirs when they are replacing with boulders. my understanding is that they are considered hazardous due to the treatment they received thus the disposal fee.

    hope this helps.

They have to go to a lined landfill to be disposed of properly. Not all landfills can take them.

Takes a bit to get them started, but man do they burn!

    …so I’ve heard.

Put them on the curb with a big “FREE” sign. Put an add in Craigslist under the free section.

    They’ll disappear.

Make sure you dont list them for free, people will think they are junk. list them for $50 bucks and there will be lines of people waiting to take them off your hands…

I use a few RR ties to rest the 12 aluminum boat on during the winter months. I actually aquired them after my buddy’s Eagle Scout project was finished, they were extras. The ties had been donated to be used to build Horse-Shoe and Bacci Ball pits at a local park. Someone will have a use for them, and a $50 price tag will get biters seeing as ties usually cost near or above $20 a piece.

Burn them at night , then add some used tires . Because it would be dumb to burn new ones .. I leared this on a fire run , A farmer was burning a fence row out ,EPA called us out to put it out , Farmer shows up pissed that we are putting out his fire , EPA guy tells him you cant use used tires to start a fire , Farmer replies , ” Well hell nobody would give me new ones ” ! Would have likes to urine my pants from laughing …

Popper; you put something (as a buffer) “between” the ties and the aluminum boat, right?
You probly don’t want the chemicals that are used in “treating” the ties to be interacting with the aluminum.

I tried forever to donate or just give a decent piano away. After many headaches, $50 add on Craigslist and they “jordan’d” me down to $20 and offered to move it.

The old joke is true, a couch on the curb with a free sign will sit for weeks. A $10 price tag and it will be stolen in an hour.

Please don’t burn them. RR ties are full of nasty chemicals to prevent rot and insect damage. There’s a reason why you never will meet any old men who worked in a RR tie factory.

I totally agree, put them on Craigslist in a for sale ad with a price/OBO on them and good pics. Your phone will be on fire within an hour.

I’ve got about 240 of them, 28 years old, that will be going away in about 2 weeks. We are replacing them w/ cut face concrete block.

My hat is out in front of all of you “Alms, alms for the poor!”

Brian, you have a smudge on your chin.

Now we know how you have those “bug-free” beach fires in the evening Brian. I never thought of creosote fog….good work.

    It was a statement.

Wow! 240! That would wake up the fire marshal!

Is not having Mosquito’s to bite you or birds to poop on your truck a bad thing?

On a more serious note………..it’s amazing any of us are still alive with all the crap we burned years ago.

There are usually plenty of them laying along RR tracks. Add to the pile. RR company will have to dispose of them sometime.
