Wasps under the deck…how to prevent?

Every summer the wasps/hornets start making hanging nests under my deck, most of the deck is less than 3 feet off the ground.
I don’t recall my parents having issues with them when I was growing up so I wonder why they are so drawn to my deck.

Is there anything a guy can do to prevent them from starting or is it just spraying them when they start?

Put a little gasoline in a bug sprayer, it drops them instantly, a whole 6″ in diameter nest will be dead and gone in about 15 to 30 seconds, I’ve never heard of anything that keeps them from building a nest.

Don’t know about keeping them away. It seems once I hit them a couple times with the bee spray early they don’t come back the rest of the year. 3′ off the ground I don’t know how you could effectively stay after them.. I can get to all my problem areas easly. I’ll be watching to see if someone has a solution since we people in family that are allergic.

Drape a tarp over the deck and set off a couple bug bombs under it. Better living thru chemicals

Google “fake wasp nest”… supposedly the fake nest keeps wasps from setting up shop because they are territorial. Just heard of this myself.

I’m a little skeptical about the fake nests. I have and have seen 3 and 4 old nests with a new one being build right next to it. I’ve been wrong many many times before though.

I’m am on the same page as the poster that “pre sprays” problem areas. I’ll spray a paper towel and wipe down an area pre treating it. I don’t recall having any nests in those areas.

3′ high deck? Got a 7 year old neighbor kid??

Make a wasp trap out of a 2 liter pop bottle. Google the directions. No wasps – no nests?

Hang that picture of Brian shooting snakes under the deck that would deter allot of things!

We used to have issues like that. Called out an exterminator and they bug us no more. They come out every three months. If we have any bug or mice problems in those three months they come back out for free. I think it’s $90 per visit. Well worth it to be bug, wasp and mouse free.

    Thanks for the replies.
I got some spray so as long as it isn’t pouring this afternoon I am going to do a little recon under the deck and spray any nests I run across. With the cooler temps and rain today it should have the little buggers in the nest and hopefully a little sluggish…which will be good for me/bad for them!!

…and make sure someone is around. Anaphylactic shock is nothing to screw with. It’s one thing to accidentally run into a nest. Precautions should be taken when you know you’re going to mess with them.

Just last night there was a blurb on the national new about a husband died from bee stings.

Most of them spray something similar to:

    Tempo SC Ultra

This stuff is a wonder insecticide and has decent staying power via a residue it leaves. You might need to respray every month or two, but it not only kills them, it keeps them from coming back.

Did I mention it works for asian beetles, boxelder bugs, tentworms, spiders, etc?

Mix it hot and let ‘er fly. I keep a hand-spray bottle handy, but the pro’s figure out the right rate and suck it up into a pressure washer to coat the whole exterior of your house.
