Well, another rural lake in Northern MN was found to have Zebra Mussels.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources confirms that zebra mussels have been found in Sand Lake in Itasca County.

DNR experts confirmed the finding of a homeowner who found adult zebra mussels attached to a dock removed from Sand Lake last fall.

The Duluth News Tribune reports preliminary searches of connected waters also found zebra mussels in Little Sand Lake.

Sand Lake and Little Sand Lake are part of a chain of lakes that eventually flow into Bigfork River.

Additional searches of connected waters are being performed to determine the scope of the infestation.

    OK, I’m

    Questions:
1st: Why the delay in reporting this, when the home/lake-shore Owner found these last fall when he removed his dock?

2nd: Since they’ve had the time, why are no other docks reported to be covered with them?

3rd: Was this Lakeshore Owner responsible for the infestation?

4th: Did they check to see when he brought the dock to the lake?

5th: Did they check to see if he has been on other infested waters with his boat or brought bait/bait water home from an infested lake? Or did he have friends/company up to visit with their boat from an infested lake?

6th: Are they on the rocks and other surrounding structures? If NOT?, Why NOT?

7th: Is this home /lake-shore owner a member of a lake association fighting for inspections or closing accesses?

Just many many more questions? leaving me and curious as to answers

I am tempted to suspect someone associated with this property brought them along from another lake.

According to what I heard this morning, they were not found last fall. He found them this spring when installing his dock, but they were attached last fall when he removed it logically.

that right there answers some of your questions.. why jump the gun and report things until you check surrounding areas or connected waters to see if they are in there too.. they did that found more so that was confirmation..

sounds like if you find something bad you shouldn’t report it or fingers will be pointed at you..

bottom line is and it is sad but many more lakes/rivers will in the near future be found to be infested with zebs.. many of witch have been for many years some not so long.. but with everyone looking for them more will be found..

I’m not so sure zeebs are as bad as they are made out to be.. some rivers and lakes i fish are infested.. biggest changes have been improved clarity of water improved fishing.

    there is life after zebs

on that note everyone should do there part by draining boats/bait water and cleaning any weeds debris from there boats..
that’s just respect for the environment, ones self and others!

They cannot be stopped. The sooner everyone accepts that the better off we will all be. I think.

Inevitable? Probably. But I am all for doing things within reason to slow them. However, “within reason” is a very broad term with varying definitions depending on who you talk to.

For me, within reason means minimal effort and minimal (or 0) cost.

Education is enough. Teach everyone good table manners but stop the other madness that is costing us money, time and enjoyment.

I was just warning my Dad last weekend about all the new MN rules. He just shakes his head when I tell him all the dumb stuff we do over here.

There is no doubt that boat owners/vacationers are staying out of Minnesota.

‘course the reply I get from that comment is “we don’t want them to bring ais into the state”.

Again, it’s presumed guilty and not the American way.

I say just stock sheephead in all MN lakes to eliminate the zeebs. Then you all can enjoy the fun of catching non-stop sheepshead like we do down here on the Miss.

We used to have zeebs everywhere, every cast your line was chewed up, every stick or weed caught had them attached, trolling cranks was a sure way to catch zeebs all day long. Now we have sheepshead EVERYWHERE, millions of them.. and I have not seen a zeeb in a couple years. All I see are empty shells everywhere after a flood.

Does anyone have thoughts on why fishing license sales are down?

Between DWTS, Splash, American Idol, The Voice, and Real Houswives of [insert city], who has time to fish?

No kidding, we need a Johnny Zebramussel, just to go around and get them planted in every lake so the state can stop wasting millions of dollars on this.

Agreed and the best we can do is try to slow the spread. With about 800,000 boats registered (this includes basically anything that floats) many lakes will be infested. Zebra Muscle stew?

I have a feeling that would backfire big time. Lake associations and cities would be trying to close public accesses everywhere. They would use, “We don’t want the NEXT AIS to ruin our lake, look how fast Zeebs spread with all the effort that was put into stopping them. Let us close our lake off and be proactive”.

I think it is within reason to shut down public landings

Yeah I forgot to add what other people’s “within reason” means.
