Looking for advice on Ford Rangers, found a 2000 with 170K miles and has been in Arizona for the first half of its life. seems clean and well taken care of. I have heard there are some issues with the transmissions?? If you can help would be great, My son is trying to purchase this vehicle and I want to see it run for a bit without any issues.

    Your help is much appreciated.

2000 with 170K miles? So how is he with the wrenches? Any vehicle that old with that many miles will need some work. Good vehicle for someone that doesn’t mind unexpected breakdowns and climbing under the hood.

From what I heard,it was the 5 speed autos that had the problems.None with a manual trans.

Those late 90’s and early 2000’s Ranger/Explorers just seem to keep going. I recently started driving what was my wife’s 98 Explorer with 170K because, well, it doesn’t look or sounds as nice as it did 15 years ago. I kept waiting for the thing to give out, but it just hasn’t and I gave in to my wife for new wheels. In it’s life time we have rebuilt the tranny for $1650 about 50K ago and replaced the fuel pump 7 years ago.

My opinion is that it might be one of the most dependable autos from it’s time.

I have had that same vehicle for the past 10 years and have not had any problem with the transmission. The only work that I have had to do is replace the alternator at 100,000 miles, replace the water pump pulley, and replace a sway bar and ball bearings at around 140,000 miles. Overall it has been a good vehicle for me but like any vehicle make sure you give it a good look before buying it.

I have had two rangers, 92 and a 02. If it has the 4.0 engine it will run for a long time. Just traded the 02 in and it had 243000 on it and still ran like new. I did have to replace the trany at 205000.
Kind of wished that I still had it, they are a great truck!

Check out the recall (can’t remember the exact model years) on fires starting in the cruise control I think. My Nephew had one that burnt, recall saved him cuz he had his documentation.

Im currently driving a 1999 xlt 4×4 ranger with 3.0 v6 and auto trans with 248000 miles bought it with 80000. Other than basic maintenance and an alternator and battery i have not had any big repairs. I have been waiting for it to die but it just seems to keep going. If it is in good shape and the price is right i would go for it.
This truck does just about everything i need even pulled 18mpg last weekend pulling my boat to winnie. averages 18-20mpg

I had a ’97 Ranger that had 150,000+ on it. The check engine light was always on and it coded as a tranny problem, a reverse valve to be exact. It always worked, was just a little balky going into reverse when cold. Currently have a ’98 ranger with 100,000+ on it and no problems at all, except it burns oil because a valve job was done on it. Found that out after I bought it.

only problem I’ve seen is Rusty frames that won’t pass inspection… winter run vehicles though… was a great truck Mazda made!!

Mazda did not make the Ranger pickup. Ford made it and Mazda resold it under their brand after they stopped importing the B2000.
