Long story short. I bought a simple fishing boat a few years back. The stickers were good til the end of 2012. I now need to get the boat registered in my name (I’m aware I should have done this already). Anyway the regs say:

“When you register your boat for the first time, know its length, manufacturer, type of hull material (wood, metal, or plastic), type of propulsion, model, year, serial or hull identification number (HIN) and have a sales receipt that shows you have paid the sales tax.”

Where do I get a reciept that shows I paid the sales tax? Anything else I should know when I show up to get this registered?

Do you have a bill of sale signed by the previous owner? If not, you may have some difficulties, depending who you get at the DMV.

I do not have a bill of sale. I purchased the boat with cash from a private party.

if it already had a license all of that information will be in the system including the last owner.
The sales tax would be collected at the time transfer which you are doing now. I believe there is an amount upto a certain dollar figure that you do not have to pay sales tax,(do not know what that is)

Yep, Just tear off one of the 2012 stickers and bring that in with you. They’ll have all the info there.

You have not and will not have to pay sales tax.

If you get really really lucky the clerk might just transfer it right there for you but I doubt it. As said you’ll have to track down the previous owner and get him to sign off and/or get a new duplicate registration. If the boat is titled you’ll need that too.
