Dayton’s Vikings Stadium Plan

I love how it is ok to treat certain segments of the society with prejudice. I guess it is ok if the self righteous look down on that group of people. They will back you even though if the unfair tax were applied to any other legal product there would be outrage.

Why should smokers fund the stadium while the rest of the state gets off? How is smoking related to the Vikings? Why don’t we tax anti depressants, booze or people who keep their trust fund in South Dakota, protecting it from Minnesota Taxes?

Because smoking is bad and no one will ever step up to say anything negative about a cigarette tax as it looks like they are endorsing smoking somehow.

    The perfect crime, dude.

    You figured it out.

Its funny how about 75% of the populace are just ignorant dolts. It would be nice if some politician just stood up and said, “You know I don’t agree with smoking, nor do I endorse it. However I am against prejudice, inequality and treating people like second class citizens. I will not stand for making one segment of society pay for something while the rest get off scott free, whether I agree with what those people do or not. This would be no different than asking just minorities, women, homosexuals or middle class people to pay for something”.

Not to mention Dayton just fought for” fairness” and “equality”for all Minnesotans in his quest to allow [censored] people to marry.Smokers will now be subjected to paying for a stadium they wont even be able to leave to have a ciggarette.Fairness and equality the Democratic way

It’s also an acceptable form of self-righteousness because while it hurts the smoker financially to increase the tax on the cigs, it’s really for the smoker’s own good. You know, to encourage them to quit.

Also, rightly or wrongly, the public is convinced that like “the rich” (generally defined as anyone who makes more than I do), smokers are (here we go again) “not paying thier fair share” because as everyone knows they cost us billions in unnecessary healthcare-related costs.

Sometimes I think that you would have to go from a blue state to a red state. Maybe, maybe things would be a little different, but I agree!!!

Except they know it won’t get people who are addicted to quit and that is really the last thing they want. They do like exploiting them though.

I am pretty sure smokers pay more than their fair share in health expenses in the taxes that already exist.

I propose that if this happens that one game at the stadium you get a mass of smokers to go and at a predetermined time you light up in the stadium. That would be awesome.

This isn’t a Democratic thing…Look over the years. Republicans have also put taxes on smokes. It’s the “easy out” for politicians. The Right wing does the same thing…

I agree. However this is Dayton’s budget plan. But I also know that Republican’s aren’t complaining about raising cigarette taxes. They are just complaining that it is going to a stadium.

I Completely disagree with how the general public thinks. How about the LAZY Fat A**es all over the state that cost us BILLIONS in medical expense and overall health care that the rest of us are paying for!??? Lets add a $1.50 tax on all fast food then eh? This is just more government control over what they say we should and shouldn’t do.

So by paying for a @#$# stadium, this lowers the unnecessary healthcare-related costs?

Anyone paying for that #$$% stadium besides the OWNERS is WRONG.

Just did a little research. USA Today

Smokers cost to the country each year: 96 Billion
    Obesity: 344 Billion

If he’s concerned about the future of the state, maybe he should tax Nintendo games a little harder.

IF (and I do say if…) the State can prove that by investing tax dollars into this thing, the State of Mn would get some funds towards the general fund…Than I say go for it! This thing is going to benefit Minnesotan’s and Ziggies pocket as well…

    No, no, no.

By making you pay for the stadium, we’re encouraging you to quit smoking by taxing the ###t out of you. For your own good, obviously.

Don’t you see? It all makes perfect sense.

Dayton said many, many times onthe campain trail that funds in the general account (State taxpayer money) would never be used to pay for a stadium. He lied and should be tossed out of office.

The main reason we tax cigs is to pay for the health costs associated with smoking. That money should be held in a dedicated account.

I have no dog in this fight other than a motto I live by. You can’t regulate stupidity. I haven’t seen increased cig prices stop many people from smoking, just gives them more to gripe about. Like gas prices, the raised prices doesn’t stop people from driving. Just gives them something to complain about.

Until people learn that they are the consumers and have the power to purchase or not purchase goods, they will continue to pay the current prices and taxes. Unfortunately, unification is needed, and this country is as split apart as any time in my lifetime.

We can’t agree on anything, and in the end, it’s our bickering that allows these politicians to stay in office and screw us all.

That is the exact reason we tax cigs. to offset the healthcare costs. Same as gas tax is supposed to fund road construction, no difference. Our state and federal Governments are becomming a world wide joke.
