I’ve been on a mission to use Craigslist to sell off a bunch of stuff that’s cluttering up the shed and garage. My father also decided that now was the time to downsize his boat, so I sold his old boat for him as well.

All I can say is if you want some free entertainment, just post a for sale on Craigslist.

I guess what amazes me is the number of morons that will take time to reply to an ad telling you you’re way too high on price. And in the process, proving they know nothing about the item.

Maybe I’m the only one, but I can’t resist messing with the jerkbaits that send lowball offers or general comments by email.

My father’s boat was an Alumacraft CS and in good condition for the year. I posted it for $3250 and recieved an email:

Lowballer: Your way hi on that price. I’ll give you 1800, best you’re going to do. Let me know. Nobodys going to do more than that on an old boat.

So I replied: Tell you what, I’m willing to come down to $3500 for you. Let me know.

Lowballer: WTF??? Thats more thn u were asking at first.

Me: I know. I charge more to jackwagons (not what I really said, but it had Jack in it) like you. BTW, I sold it an hour ago for $3250.

Then I listed a cherry 1988 15 HP Johnson SS with electric start. The short shaft electric start is very, very rare and sought after. $900 is a very fair price, probably low, but I wanted to sell the thing. On ebay the occasional one that comes up will go for $1000.

And predictably, the next morning there was an email:

Lowballer: I cant stop laughing. $900??? For a mid 80s??? U can by a mid 1990s for that.

Me: You must be ret@rded Please send a link to ANY mid 1990s short shaft OMC outboard WITH factor electric start for $900.

Lowballer: Theres pleanty out there. Good luck youll be glad to be taking $500 in a week.

Me: I just sold the outboard to the first guy that looked at it. I didn’t have it listed for even a full day and I had 6 calls on it and guys lined up to buy it. Here’s a picture of the $900 cash, the bills are wrinkled because the guy couldn’t count them out fast enough. You must be ret@rded.

Now I’ve got a wood chipper to sell. Hopefully this will produce more entertainment.

It’s probably sad that I even reply, but I just can’t resist. Am I the only one who likes to jerk the chain of lowballers and jerkbaits?

    Funny stories.

I’ve been looking for one of them OMC 15’s but I was in the $400 range. (non-elec start) Luckily I found one for $200 through a friend that should only need a $100 thrown at it.

I had no idea they could fetch $900 in any configuration.

Age, condition, and rarity. An early 1980s in fair or average condition is only worth the $400-500 you mention.

Also, everything depends on what you need to get them going. It’s not hard to drop $100 or even $200 on parts given that OMC parts are getting rare and that’s IF you know what you’re doing and can supply your own labor.

This was in excellent condition with tank and hose. You almost never see a short shaft factory electric start, and then to get on in excellent condition…

When I posted on craigslist, I put in my cell #. I ended up getting a bunch of text messages from some cute ladies including their pictures.

I didn’t update that the item had been sold for weeks……

Well, when you advertised “cheap stud services”, you should kind of expect…

I got one recently who was gonna be leaving for a business trip in the next hour; but he would have his secretary send a cashier’s check and then if I’d call her when I received the pmt, she’d send one his delivery men over to my shop to pick up the item.

I told him to leave the pmt amount with his secretary and one of my delivery men would deliver the item to his office sometime tomorrow C.O.D.

^ so now can anyone here tell me … what does it mean when all you hear in your phone is one click and then dead air?

I respect the very limited few that just politely send a low offer and states that they know it’s well under what I’m asking, but it is a standing offer if I can’t get what i wanted.
But like you, I usually reply with the jacked up new price. Talk about lighting a fuse with some people.

What bothers me is when you find something and send an email (no phone number) and they don’t bother sending a reply. So you wait a day and send another. 3rd one gets a response because you call him a dirty rotten M&%$#&^%@*&^. His reply is I sold it. If you sell it delete the listing. Some are so stupid.

I wonder what is wrong with me? The last few things I have sold on CL I have gotten emails from GUYS that think I sound like fun in my ad.

Instead of “short shafted” I prefer, “measuring stick challenged”!!

And I’m certainly not cheap, I just like to buy on sale!!

If you need some additional entertainment try reading through some of the ads…I love this one in St Cloud; the guy says in the ad the motor is “from the 80s” but not sure on the exact yr.

I actually called him up and he told me he did in fact verify it was a 1982 or 1983 from the serial number; he also said this was verified by what his uncle told him who origanally owned the motor.

I am pretty sure they stopped making these in the early 60’s. He even increased the price from $450 to $500 the last couple days because it is “so rare”

I also just sold a 15hp Johnson for $900 from the late 70’s…Very nice condition though. These are very sought after motors.

Some people do not know the art of negotiation. It does not include insulting the seller saying they are way high and you’ll be lucky to get half that.

Even better is the idiots who email asking about items in the photo that are not listed for sale. Ie. I once listed a piano for sale that was to big to move to take the photo and a few morons asked if the artwork on the wall was for sale or included with the piano. Also listed an industrial 3 phase dust collector and some arse emails: industrial????? Sure not finding three phase 480 volts in any residential home I have ever seen.

Uh craigslist…..I have a love/hate relationship with him. I could go on and on with stories… Like the guy yesterday that came to look at my boat for sale and was in my garage for AN HOUR AND A HALF, when I bought that boat I think I made an offer 5 minutes after meeting the guy.

Or the guy that said he would buy a trailer I had for sale, then canceled our appointment to meet because he “couldn’t find his trailer hitch” then the next day I call him 30 minutes after we’re supposed to meet and he tells me “his truck broke down” yeah buddy sure it did.

I’ve also had many many good transaction on there.
