It just dawned on me. If a person making $6.15/hour in MN needs to buy gas. If they work 1 hour, after taxes they can put a whopping 1.29 gallons of gas in their auto.

Minimum Wage and gas prices

I was in Arkansas Monday picking up fish and gas was $3.19/gal. When I got to Braidwood (30 miles outside of Chicago) gas was $4.00, so who is screwing who in this game?
It’s rediculous that oil is $95 a barrel, but our dollar isn’t worth what is used to be anymore. It wasnt that long ago I remember being ticked off that gas crossed a $1 a gallon. I lived in Central IL in 2000 and I remember driving 3 hours in my beater truck to go fishing and hunting cause it didn’t cost anything at $0.90/gal. I remember paying $0.75 at the Havana station one day.
The good ‘ol days.

maybe the minimum wage law should be written something like this
“minimum hourly wage shall be calculated as: two times the average price (in Ramsey County), over the course of the preceding 6 months, of one gallon of 87 octane gasoline.”Palerider77Posts: 630May 16, 2013 at 4:03 pm #1171344Pretty hard to get a minimum wage job these days. If you are not a drug addict and work the whole time you are at work you will not be making minimum wage for long. I haven’t had a minimum wage job since I was 14. The free market works.
May 16, 2013 at 4:10 pm #1171346i must really be old, I remember 25 cent a gallon and received glassware to boot but I made $4.15 at the time

Ben, I agree … was being a little facetious
(I know it’s a little hard to read “tone” sometimes; but if you ever find yourself even wondering if Desperado is really serious or just being stupid, it’s a safe bet to err on the side of –> )by the way, I believe that’s the first one of your posts I HAVE agreed with this week (viva la differance)
Palerider77Posts: 630May 16, 2013 at 4:19 pm #1171352Glad to have found some common ground! I am really a fire breathing libertarian, I don’t really think that we need any more laws regulating how we drive. I do however still think that any intentional impairment is a bad plan. Always glad to have a friendly argument!
May 16, 2013 at 4:54 pm #1171362Compare that ratio to making $20 an hour and paying $4.20 a gallon. You were making 16.6 times the cost of a gallon, the second one is making 4.76 times more…and it drives up the cost of many other things we all need. The cost of oil per barrel is about $96 I believe, in the past it was closer to $3 per gallon and oil was a little over a $100 per barrel. They are making BILLIONS!! And there’s not a damn thing we can do about.

SURE THERE IS …
– drive less; ride a bike or walk
^ live in high density housing close to where you work so this is a feasible option
– fish in the canoe instead of the boat with an outboardAnyhow; Don’t you know the added benefit besides just saving money?
you get to feel superior about all of it!
after all . . . these are the types of things that make you a “responsible one-world citizen”May 16, 2013 at 5:55 pm #1171378The minumum wage should be $50/hour so we can all pay some taxes, have skin in the game, and shared prosperity.
Oh, and people who cant find work should get the equivalent of $40/hour. They dont need as much, since they dont need work clothes and dont have to commute.
We should also fix gas prices at $2.00/gallon.

yup, all of that would be a good start
… but then we also need a law that no-one shall be made to wait in line any more than 15 minutes at a gas station

One thing you will NEVER see…..a Prius with tinted windows. Trust me, I have looked….for years….hasnt happened yet. They want you to see how wonderful they are for having a car whose manufacturing results in acres of strip mining for the battery instead of one that drills oil.
May 16, 2013 at 7:23 pm #1171405In Bloomington as in many others areas across Twin Cities,
Gas Price jumped again, 2nd time in less than 24 hours to $4.299 this morning, Yes, a 10% ($0.40) Increase in a dayTrying to talk the boss into going to a 4-10 hour day work week.
Gotta try for more fishing time.

Well it’s true that most Prius-drivers’ doesn’t stink, but that’s not because they drive a Prius … it’s because they don’t eat anything other than oatmeal and tofu

I do own a bike and a canoe, can’t move, not that I would, I have a job where I get transfered about every year to a different store. I’m not going to cut things out of my life that i truly enjoy, it’s hard to muskie fish on leech lake out of a canoe. Just frustrating because I’m pretty sure its not necessary

I get it..I just got a little riled up. I usually avoid threads like this. One thing is for sure…I can’t afford a Wilcraft now!!! Good luck fishin’ next time out
May 17, 2013 at 9:28 am #1171549Talk about feeling older,,,when I got out of highschool gas was eigther 12 or 15 cents a gallon, I’ll be 63 in June. Back then you could drive from Cedar Rapids here to Denver Colorado and back for a $20 bill. For the last 15 years I always thought gas was way overpriced, now it seems some are also figuireing out that it is, so now I don’t feel so alone, sigh.
smoke grubPosts: 251May 17, 2013 at 12:10 pm #1171577in 1973 minimum wage was 1.35 going to 1.65 an hour.. and as a high school student, that’s what I was making. even when gas went from 25 cents a gallon to 45 cents, I was making more then then minimum wage is now.. at least I could get 4 gallons of gas for an hours worth of work.. not now.. not even 2 gallons of gas..

When you’re behind the wheel of an oil burner…. you’re always winning.
