I have no plans to use the universal transducer and was wondering if anyone has removed the cable from the head and if it is difficult or I should just leave it alone. I’ve coiled it up, but I’d like to do away with the clutter.

Why dont you want to use it ? 
If you aren’t going to use the us2 cable it is easy to remove. All you have to do is take the four screws out that hold the top of the head on and take the top off. Then under the top you will see the us2 cable connection just unscrew the ends and pull it out. Then put the the top back on.
The reason I’m not sure it would work better than the one that came with the locator and the other is that I don’t have the correct connectors to hook them up. I’d probably use if I knew it would work fine before I buy connectors.
I’ve never had an issue with my us2 transducer.
