So is your lake open for opener?

So who still has a frozen lake for opener? Was hoping to fish Mille lacs this weekend but that looks iffy at best. Wil has been posting some current photos from the north end with a little open water in them. High winds this weekend and dodging floating ice on the big lake does not sound like a good combination. Think plan B is going to be pool 2 for me.

So who else is getting iced out for opener and where?

Update! I called up North. Some open water near shore and nice weather set for today. Fingers crossed. Smaller lake – very close to Vermilion (NE MN).

Knife has been ice out since Tuesday apparently. I hope the people who wanted to fish Mille Lacs don’t hit Knife up, it gets enough opener traffic as is on a lake that really isn’t much of a walleye lake anymore.

The smaller lakes around me are open, but the bigger bodies of water still have a lot of ice on them.

Thats funny. last time I fished that big bobbers, heavy leaders and spoons seemed to be the bait of choice. Trick seemed to be casting them as far as you could and over as many lines as possible. Then reel like crazy with that no idea whats going on look on your face.

I like tooling under the bridge and then turning around and coming back 5 minutes later. The yokals love that move.

Seriously though, I love that arm up to the dam. Its probably not a good idea to hit it on opener though unless you don’t mind a riot.

Photo from my cuz who has a cabin on Lake Vermilion (NE MN). Not sure of ice conditions to the rest of the lake. Good luck everyone.

It wont be long before the ice is off of Long Lake in Detroit Lakes. This is the most recent picture from Thursday and it is broken up more today. I expect it to be gone either tonight or by the end of the day tomorrow with the wind 20 mph with gusts to 36
