So if for the next 36 hrs (6pm Wed to 6am Friday) … a lake has air temps between 28 and 32 degrees, with a couple hours Thurs afternoon being 33 to 36 degrees, no current, and winds 5mph or less; how much NEW ICE should we expect to see form on the stretch of open water that’s currently between the shore and the sheet of OLD ICE that’s still out in the middle of the lake ?

So; given my set of conditions, the chart would indicate about a third of an inch in 36 hours

    BUT

is that chart still valid considering the more direct sun angle that we have this time of year ?

Did a little check this morning. Temp was upper 30’s yesterday. Ice was out about 20 feet from shore. Temp was 30 degrees when I checked this morning with a north wind around 10 mph. Ice had formed between the old ice and shore. Grabbed the mic and walked down to the lake. Broke of a chunk of the new ice. Had to make numerous measurements because as soon as the warm micrometer closed on the ice it would start melting and the reading would decrease. Determined that the ice was .285 inches thick.

Nope. That’s how I broke a piece off, just stepped on it. It takes a lot more than that to hold my big butt.
