For the last couple days I’ve had some pain in my lower left hand belly area near my belt line. It was never steady hurt but if I bent over to tie a shoe or twisted my body just so, it made itself known. No fever, have felt absolutely fine. Until this morning when the pain was ramped up a bit and was easier to flare it. So I went to the ER.

3 hours later, blood work and a CT scan done, I was told that I have diverticulitis. This is an infection/inflamation of the large intestine that is most always accompanied by, none other than, pain. There’s no real cause for the inflamation to set in other than to assure the person getting the afflicition of receiving an adequate dose of hurt.

I’ve started taking the regimine of horse-pills that will suppliment my three meals a day. Since returning home from the ER, the level and expanse of pain has quadrupled. Funny how I thought maybe I caught this misery before it because misery. I looked on the internet to see what I might be in for with this crap and everything I have read is quickly coming true in my case too. This is going to be fun, I can tell.

Note to self….do not for any reason cough, sneeze or push a fart.

Didn’t your doctor tell you that diverticulitis is the inflammation of the diverticula, or small pouches that form in your large intestine?? He should have told you what foods to avoid so as to not make the condition worse. I have had the same issue for the last 20 years.

Do a google search for diverticulosis to get all the info.

We had a good talk about the condition and what aggrevates it. I did quite a bit of reading this afternoon on it. I sure hope I’m not looking forward to having this until I hit the grave.

You never get rid of the pouching in the intestine. You just have to learn what you eat that causes the irritation and avoid it. Lettuce is a bad one for me.

Did he tell you that the food collects in the pouches and actually causes the infection that gives you the pain. Are you being treated with antibiotics?

A friend of mine had it. Peanuts and popcorn lodged in those “pockets” and got toxic.
Hava you talked to the Roto Rooter man ?
Just kidding ! Good luck and good health to you !!!!

Sorry to hear of your pain and discovery of this medical condition. I hope your physician did tests(even colonoscopy) to be sure you have Diverticulitis vs Colitis! Both suck! Not to be confused (easily) with Crohn’s Disease.Which also sucks!
Diverticulitis is as mentioned, having these little pouches like appendixes hanging off your lower colon. Colitis can be ‘Ulcerative Colitis’, and the treatment can be a little different for each. Be damn sure ‘they’ are getting that diagnosis correct! Your very well-being is counting on it…

It’s nuts, literally. I had the same thing a few years back, thought I was dying on the way up north for a family vacation. Went to e.r, diverticulitis. The main thing they told me i
was to avoid nuts, seeds, etc. My 22 yr old nephew recently came down with the same situation, and was given the same advice. Sucks, but, We have been able to keep it in check. I’m surprised your doc didn’t say anything about nuts. That seems to be the instigator. Check that out.

I see that nobody has addressed the big question. Can you still drink beer with this ailment?

Not with the meds I get to take.I don’t drink anyway so I let glenn57 take care of the beer end.

Doc mentioned that the meds might make me feel a little bloated. No doubt. No room for beer.

Don’t take this issue lightly as i had it 4 years ago until i was forced to go to Mayo and have an emergency surgery.

I fought and fought it but the infection got so bad that it leaked into my baldder and burnt a hole in that as well.

They ended up cutting out approx 7″ of my Colon. Let’s just say i am fortunate not to have had to wear a catheter for the rest of my life but 2 different surgeries and 2 different 6 day stays in the hospital is not what you want.
    Trust me on this one.

Go to Mayo as my hospital in Albert Lea had no idea just guesses on what it was until i was in to much pain.

Dr. Henry Schiller at Mayo is the man for you!

Good luck and i hope you don’t have to go through what i did.

Yeah, but that catheter in the boat on a windy day could be convenient. Just hold that tube over the side and empty out.

Exactly my point…be absolutely sure what your dealing with. Ask for that ‘second-opinion!’
