IMO the cabelas knock offs arent very good… Check out the storm deep thundersticks for a less expensive crank that works great. You can usually get them for a pretty good price at fleet farm

I have been using flicker shads alot on my favorite trolling runs on P2 and they do work pretty well…One thing I don’t like is I have to let out so much line when long line trolling using them. More specifically, I was looking at crankbaits to use in the Miss. River I can get down to around 15′ w/o letting so much line out. I also don’t want to start using leadcore.
Since the Walleye runners say they have a max depth of 22′ I thought they would be easier to get down w/o so much line. Had a few massive tangles when long line trolling multiple rods (braid) last yr.
Since I bought the Walleye runners I will try those but I will also look at the thundersticks.
Not much better than a #5 flicker on leadcore in that 15-20′ of water range.
Have you tried running the #9 flickers yet Ken? I havent but it might be another option to get baits down.
Yea long line trolling has its limits when you get those baits way out there. Hook a weed, or have one a little out of tune and it quickly cruising over to find its neighbor. Lead core would be another good option but those rods can get heavy to hold all day. Was eyeing up some of those Shimanos Dean has for sale this morning. the 7’6″ rods and longer are another good way to get those baits apart.
KWP,
Thanks for the heads up on the runners.
If you like trolling deep you should consider getting set up with a couple lead core rigs. Most of the time, you’re going to be better off pulling shad style baits than those runner baits (not always, but much of the time). Keep in mind that those are completely different than the runners and if the eyes are biting on the shad baits they may not give your runners much or a look. Much of that will depend on what the walleye are feeding on and what mood they are in.
Best of luck!

Are you sure the cranks you have heard about weren’t Reef Runners? Those are very popular with walleye fisherman. Cant say as I’ve ever had a bite with the cabelas knockoffs, but have caught quite a few on reef runners.
Maybe you guys are right about the “runner” style baits with their different action. Was looking for a better option to get my cranks down other than leadcore…There is something about leadcore that just doesn’t appeal to me.
I will try the both the cabela’s runners and the larger flicker shads and report back this Summer.
You are right about the tangles Mike, had a few last yr (even a triple) and the root cause was one the flicker shads out of tune and finding his neighboor. Those flicker shads sure do catch fish but I just hate all the line you have to let out to get them down.

I used to feel that way about leadcore. But I fortunately got to spend some time with some guys who knew how to run leadcore correctly. I was shown the light and now I can’t get away from it. If you like to pull cranks try to connect with someone who is handy with leadcore and see if you can jump in the boat with them for an outing or two. You’ll be glad you did.
I liked it even better when the Walleye Runners went on sale for $1.99 each.
The Cabelas Walleye Runners are great baits, the early ones were the best. They catch more than the RR in my boat, by far.

Well put Wade! For depths over 10′ deep learning how to leadcore can really pay dividends… It allows you to get baits into the zone quicker and with much less line out than long lining, it allows you to choose the size of bait you’re using (if the fish are feeding on smaller minnows they might not want a larger bait), and it actually gives you much more precise control of the depth your lures are running so you can easily keep them in “the zone”. And with the new 832 suffix leadcore it doesn’t require as large and bulky of reels as people may think. If you are heading up to Mille Lacs this summer look me up and it it works I could bring you out and help shorten the learning curve
Thanks for the heads up on the sale. I have about 20 and have had limited success with them compared to other similar baits. They aren’t deep divers but I have had success on the Cabela’s shad style baits.
