I was wandering everyone else’s opinion on ice on opener this year. For the last 15 years we have gone to winni. With the weather this year I am concerned there will be ice. Thinking we should maybe push our trip back a week or to. What are other people thinkin?

MN DNR fish regulations site for special seasonal closings shows opener on two rivers and one lake already delayed due to unusual late ice up in Arrowhead. Apparently emphasis will be on protecting spawning walleye and avoid fisasco that resulted in the state’s record some years back on border waters. The DNR ice-out site shows only about five lakes down by Iowa currently open.
The on-again off again landings situation and walk-out ATV conditions makes a guy hope that not every bait store dealer or resorter has headed south for spring break. Friends hibernating in northwoods tell me Nature is about three weeks behind normal and eight weeks behind last year.
Hope the resorts on Winnie catch a break…and you, too.

My guess is winninmaboshi, how ever that lake is spelled or pronounced .
Were on Sand Lake just east of the big lake and we are playing it by ear giving it 1 extra week. Our group is flexible except for one that’s out of state.

Will they actually allow that ? or will they push the opener back to protect the spawn ?

Based on Past years with late ice outs:

they’re pretty set on opener date being opener date
rather than push the date back, just some specific spots (like some river mouths) may be closed

But Opener is A LOT more about lakes-area tourism than protecting any fish species

those “special reg” seasonal closures are not that uncommon to see

the Tamarack River at Waskish and where it flows into Upper Red Lake is often closed until the first of June
But the majority of the surface of the lake is opened on opener date
and many lakes in that area had ice on opener as recently as 2008
