Ice on opener!

I know this question has been asked before, but with all the recent snow and cold and no 50’s in the forecast for the next 10 days, any one want to revise their ice out forecast. Up here just north of Brainerd there are still trucks driving on the ice! It’s April 12 th! In my opinion there is no way the big lakes like Mille, Whitefish, Leech, Winnie will be ice free in less than a month. Maybe small lakes might be open if we get a bunch of rain but the weatherman just said there isn’t a 60 degree temp in the distant forecast! One more thought, in just over 2 months, the days start getting shorter, sorry, just had to add that!

Rather selfish for me, but I hope it is not out, ICE locked = NO NETS in Mille Lacs and other Walleye lakes

Isn’t it a matter of not if, but when? Can they still net during the fishing season? Nothing will change except for when the lake will allow the nets, yes?

Maybe that is just mother nature’s way of taking her lake back and stopping the netters from destroying it.

I am interested to hear the answer to whether or not they can net after the opener. Hopefully someone with the answer will chime in

Yes they can net later, hopefully the spawn is wrapping up and also, it is ALOT harder to net, when there will be hundreds of boats at each landing, of hook and line fisherman and also, they can net, but not when it becomes dangerous to society, I can see issues with boats not seeing the nets and getting them tangled in their props… dangerous

They can net anytime they want. That fact is, the DNR walks a wide circle around the tribes and the GLIFWC has no interest in punishing the netters who don’t obey the “laws” they currently have.

Guys, can we bring this back on topic to ice out?

Does anyone remember the last time there was ice around for opener? I know about six or seven years back it was pretty late. Crane had ice until the wednesday before and some of the way northeaster lakes up by Seagull got a postponed opening to allow for the spawn.

While it seems like winter will never end, it always does. That sun just gets way too high in the sky to not melt the ice.

On another note this post helped me decide something for the weekend. Headed up around Nisswa. Was thinking of driving the car with good gas mileage. Now that it seems that area is still safe for truck travel, bring out the gas guzzler. I’m packing the auger and headed up after work

Vermilion had ice in 2008. Some bays and channels were open, but most of it was locked up.

We backed our reservations one week, it still might not ready by 5/19 when we get there.

It wont take long once things heat up a little bit, the sun really makes a difference this time of year.

2 of the coldest springs in the last 5? We need to burn more gas and heat up this planet.

2nd morning. May 2008. Near Deer River. One of the nearby big lakes was locked up with ice all weekend.

Thanks guys. It was 2008 that I was thinking of. I remembered the snow on opener but not if there any lakes were still locked up. Skipped opener and went a week later.

This year I’ve got a wedding on a lakefront for the weekend after opener. The fiance is really nervous about spring not showing up. Don’t think I’ll send her this thread, she’s worrying about enough already

All on the West shore if I remember correctly. I remember that was a great year for big fish. I had two at 28″ and we had several 26″+ in the group. I was on Pepin for the opener, so ice wasn’t an issue.
