Are those Northwest pilots drinking again????
Somebody should pull him over.
When was that taken? I think I can still see it out my window at work.
Imagine that… a 90′ TURN near an airport The one I witnessed was in no mans land, probably over Freeport and odd to me

If I didn’t know any better, I’d say it looks like the one plane may have veered to avoid a near collision.

Very unlikely in controlled and high-traffic airspace aroudn the cities. Also, depending on temps and winds, vapor trails can hang in the air for significant periods of time, so the airplanes could have been 5 or 10 minutes and dozens of miles apart.
I will say that it was always interesting when I was flying into the cities at night espeically. I just never thought about how many aircraft are in the air at once, but flying in from St. Cloud one night when the beacons and strobes are very visible for very long distances, I counted over 50 aircraft in just the 180 arc in front of me. Granted, at 5000-some feet or whatever I was at, you can see a long way and some of those airplanes were probably out over Wisconsin even, but still it’s a little bit disconcerting because during the day, other aircraft don’t stand out nearly as much.

Close calls are not a rare occurence. And evasive turns happen quite frequently.

I agree with this view. They circle quite a bit over MSP when the airport is busy with arrivals and departures. It’s kind of like waiting in line for the next runway available.
I flew into MSP this winter and we were under a 1000 feet approaching the runway and the plane in front of us slowed down to much and our pilot had to pull up and circle again. We then went into another wide circle and came back in to about 500 feet and the plane in front of us almost skidded off the runway due to icing on the runway. We went up again…. They then closed the runway and we didn’t have enough fuel to circle again so off to Duluth we went. We refueled in Duluth and then had to wait for the runway to open. After fueling and the wait we made the 27 minute flight to MSP. The original hour and a half flight was 4 hours after all said and done.

Nothing near a collision. The straight trail was there and the plane turning is there in the photo.
