The FW and I were discussing boat ramps and why I always use pay ramps.

For me its simple,I don’t use unattended ramps, the 2 ramps I use either the owner of the property is the there or the manager of the Resort is there to try to keep an eye on things. Both of which are close to area of water I fish the most.

What kind of ramps do you use and why?

    Pay or free ?

Interesting question… I probably answer this question most often by going with the ramp closest to where I want to fish. Beyond that, the choice between pay and public has a lot to do with the area and my perception of the risks associated with the unattended public launch.

Whichever is closest to where I want to fish. Or whatever isn’t frozen…that narrows it down rather quickly this time of year.

Both.I like short boat rides to the areas I want to fish. All fish are not caught at the dam.

On the river, a pay ramp if it is close. Same reasons you said, people are around and always someone to help if you need it. Otherwise, whichever public ramp is close and easy to use.

The best one. Here in Wisconsin we pay most of the time or get yearly passes.

Minnesota has too many very well kept free accesses for me to want to pay for one. If I’m staying at a resort than I don’t mind paying

Last I heard yes. And it better than a normal boat ramp. It has a bait & tackle store and are willing to give you free advice that actually works. You can’t get that just anywhere. And every once in a while that BK character graces you with his presence.

Many of the local lakes I fish belong to the local park district which has their launch fee or annual pass. Ramps are kept nice but the fact the park closes at 10 sucks. All the local ramps for the river are free but not in the best neighborhoods, so their is one further down that is pay per hour parking but well lighted and more secure so usually opt out for that. Bottom line will pay if it feels it is worthy of the $$ in regards to ramp condition, security, and ease of access.

Everts didn’t really have a season pass. It was a limited edition calendar with photos of the resort and area for the 12 months of the year. Kerry Harvey’s wife Deb did an awesome job with those photos.

With the calendar came 12 launch passes.

Last I heard they were sold out for the year.

But beyond that, there’s many a angler that have shortened their learning curve by launching at the chunk of beach they call Everts Resort.

If you look at your paycheck these days, are any of them really free?

I would say coming from Northern MN (where pay ramps are extremely unusual) I find pay ramps irritating and frustrating. Like stated above, we already pay a lot for these ramps on pay day.

While I did frequent Evert’s a lot. I tend to hit the Pool 4 ramp closest to where I intend on fishing.
