I am looking at adding a kicker motor to a Tracker 175. What would be the smallest hp you would go with.

I have been advised not to bind the steering for the kicker motor to the main motor. I have a Tracker V-175 WT Pro Guide

They (Crystal-Pierz marine of Forest lake,MN) said the No feedback steering with the v-175 will not hold to course with a kicker motor. I am actually hoping that someone has done this and found it not to be true, for now, I believe.

I wonder why they would say that? Maybe in high wind the bow would be blown off course, but that would be the case with most tin boats. In high winds I use the bow mount to steer and the kicker for speed. It works pretty well for me, but I don’t have a tracker. In low winds I can’t imagine steering would be an issue.

I have no feed back, with a kicker, no problems at all.

I do the exact same thing, in low or no wind I do not see why it would be a problem. I have a 9.9 Merc on my 17.5″ foot, I sometimes wish I had my cousin’s 6 hp Evinrude for when I really want to go super slow, but that’s not very often.

    Why?

I have no experience with a kicker but I have heard if you have it hooked up to your main motor your steering range is reduced.

Have you considered getting a lower pitch prop for slower speeds?
