Years ago more so than today , Fisherman used to follow the lunar patterns and fishing was supposed to be best as a full moon entered the forecast. And I’m not referring to a either for all you smart ‘s out there. Also it didnt refer to night time fishing either. Any thoughts ???

Best trip out last year was on the harvest moon. Wally after Wally. Have gone every full moon since then and can’t say the same. Think weather patterns have more of a factor in it then lunar, but it is still something I watch carefully.

But saying if you gave me a choice of big slow moving front coming my way for just one day/evening/night of awesome fishing I would take that over any full moon and the couple days before and after.

Weather plays a much larger role in fish activity.
There is one problem with weather though. It’s unpredictable.

Moon phase or better yet, solunar phases are extremely predictable. Therefore, if I’m planning a fishing trip to some far away place, more often than not, I will try and time it to a strong solunar phase and hope for good weather.

Hitting a good weather pattern at the exact same time as a strong solunar period is like hitting the jackpot!

I fish almost every weekend. Full moon didn’t play as big of a part as the barometer. I fished full moon and have been skunked many times. When on the other hand if I fish when barometer is up high and falling fast, that’s when I slammed them.

6 of the best fishing days of my life have been New Moons on a specific month. I have been fishing what I call lunar relative dates for about 10 years and keeping logs.
There are certain months where the fishing has historically been better on full moons and other months where the new moon has been better.
Then there are other months where the fishing is better 2 days before the full moon.
and others where the fishing is best 2 days after the new moon.
The moon relative days are consistent for a specific month every year.
For each of the months I have 2 moon relative days,
one full and one new moon.
I plot these days on next years fishing calendar and try my best to fish those days when given a choice of days.

And that special New Moon of the year,
that is the first day of vacation I schedule every year.

I thought there was a study on record fish that found a disproportional number of them caught a few days after a full/new moon.

wish I had the luxury to schedule trips around the moon.
