I saw my perfect upgrade boat at the Sportshow this weekend; Alumacraft 175 Competitor sport (full windshield) w/ a Yamaha 115 hp.

My problem is it wont fit into my 20’7″ gagage. The way I see it these are my options:

    1. Somehow make my gagage length bigger by cutting a hole in the sheetrock??
    2. Store it offsite but this makes using it impractical.
    3. Store it in my driveway but I dought my neighboors would like this; also I really don’t have room in my backyard to stor it there.
    4. Buy a different house with a bigger garage??
    5. Get used to using my as-is rig which is a little upderpowered.

Wondering what others have done with this dilema.

Any chance you can get new neighbors? Boats, 4 wheelers and sleds are encouraged to be stored outside in our neighborhood.

making current garage bigger is good
adding another garage is even better

A bump-out behind the stall your boat currently sits in can cost a couple grand but its cheaper than a new garage or a seperate cement pad behind the garage where the boat is in the open.

Any room along side the garage where a pad could be poured?

How about a dog house on the back of the garage.

I think that boat is under-powered with that 115.

build a dog house out the back of the garage, like you would for a fire place. 4′ wide(big enough for the motor and deep enough to get the boat it. Won’t have to deal with existing roof line just had a header and go. Just a thought.

Thats a tough one. My number one thing when buying a house is gonna be that it has to have atleast a 30 foot deep two stall garage, and some land to build another shed or garage if I need one.

I have been looking at storage units and they are ridiculously expensive to get one big enough for a boat. $250+ per month.

I would do what you can to extend the garage.

that’s why I like Garage Condos
you don’t “pay rent” on the unit
    you OWN it

My garage is a simple tuckunder with sheetrock on all sides. Lengthwise it needs to be about 23′ long but with today’s wide boats I also think I have a garage width issue as well. Also, I have a sidewalk next to my garage so pretty hard to make it wider.

I can’t see spending anywhere near $250/mo for storage.

I have that same issue here in the city. I have a 19’8″ Champion bass boat wiht a 250hp and a 2 stall garage. my garage is ~21″ deep. my boat has a swing tongue and I got a set of 4 (one per wheel) car dollies. I lift up the boat, put the tires on the dollies, lower the tires down and then I can push the boat anyway I want to get the boat into my garage. It is perfect asI still have room for my other toys/lawn equipment in the garage and I can still walk into the garage and us it.

That is another option and is a lot less expensive then creating/adding doghouses.

    Fun stuff!

I agree, you said the boat you have now is under-powered, I think you would be better off with the 150 on that boat.

Repower current boat if you like what you have. Otherwise see if you can wheel and deal to get a nice custom cover that installs quick and easy. And then maybe get a single stall canopy type zipper front garage IF ordinances allow it.

I didn’t look at where your located, but making a garage bigger sometimes isn’t as bad as what people think. I’ve done many times and if it fits within your required set-backs, you can gain a lot of valuable space.

Just remember that some cities have an ordinance about this.

Who buys a 21 foot garage in the first place? So sell your boat, get a kayak and go green.

Re-powering probably my best option. I live in Eden Prairie and I doubt a canopy option would be within ordinances but I could check.

I just measured my Alumacraft navigator 175 and it measure 20’6″ with the swing tongue open. I have a shorelander trailer. I think with a trailer that the swing tongue opens below the boat it would cut off more then another 6″.

Don’t forget you can trim the motor down too. I have to do this when going into my garage and park it at a slight angle. Every inch counts. Just remember to trim it back up when leaving.

I had this problem with my last boat. I did cut a hole in the sheetrock, but not a big one…I would unhook my boat in the driveway and pivot it around and put it in tongue first, the opening in the sheetrock was just to accomadate the tongue. then tilt the motor down and crank it one side. The other side of the garage wall was my workshop/laundry. We just built our retirement home on lake belle taine just west of walker mn, and i had a seperate 30′ x 42′ garage built, I’m in heaven!

Say what??? He’s going fishing, not trying to set world open water speed records.

What, specifically, are you thinking that he’s going to achieve with adding an extra 35 HP to this boat? Is this just a more must = better thing?

At best, adding 25% more HP (with the resulting extra weight gain) will result in a few extra MPH of top end speed. In practical terms, I’d have trouble justifying all that extra expense to go from 40 to 45 MPH on the top end because how often you actually have the conditions to use this speed tends to vary wildly depending on where you fish.

Hole shot may increase slightly, if at all, because of the added weight.

Sorry, I’m not seeing where maxing out HP always makes sense. To me it’s finding the sweet spot between power, weight, and purpose.
