I would happily catch trophy fish all day and then buy a walleye dinner at the resort that evening. We are not our granpa’s generation. This is sport fishing. Not sustainance fishing.

And nobody says you can’t do it your way ….then on the other hand you tell others they can’t do it their way.
It’s just stripping the rights of others to benefit yourself. IMHO
March 21, 2013 at 12:41 pm #1154615Not me. I don’t make regs and laws. I just vote for those that do. Of course that goes for antler point restrictions, banking, gun rights, healthcare, etc etc etc.

Better be, since I am going commando.March 21, 2013 at 1:24 pm #1154631Why is everyone so whipped up about this? Mille Lacs will have the same regs as most of the lakes in the state for bass. Are other lakes suffering?
This is a non-issue.

Exactly!
FryDog62Posts: 3696March 21, 2013 at 1:35 pm #1154636Because Mille Lacs is one of the few true Smallmouth trophy fisheries in the area. There are others, but this may be one of the best if not the best…
March 21, 2013 at 1:51 pm #1154648You mean like Rainey, Vermilion, Crane, Green, Upper Mississippi?

All great bodies of water. I’ve fished them all. But the trophy opportunity on Mille Lacs is second to none. I’ve caught more 20″+ fish in one day on Mille Lacs than I have in a lifetime fishing all other lakes combined.
People come from around the country to catch these old, giant smallmouth. This lake is truly living in the “good ole days” of bass fishing. You can’t go anywhere else and expect to 5 pounders (or larger) with frequency.
It needs to be appreciated. It needs recognition.

No it doesn’t. It’s a Smallmouth factory, no doubt about that. Nothing but mother nature will change that. No amount of limit changes is going to change that. Bass fisherman will enjoy the lake and all it’s potential. Walleye guys will have zero impact on the Smallmouth situation up there.
I’m amused by the all the “sky is falling” reactions.
March 22, 2013 at 4:49 pm #1155133I find it funny how the DNR has deflected from the real issue, to the point where we have pitted walleye fisherman against bass fisherman ??? It’s the old tactic, devide and conquer. Can we all agree that Mille Lacs was known as a premiere walleye lake… forever. Then in the last 20 or so years, you start hearing about the smallmouth in Mille Lacs and every year it seems there is more buzz about them. Now you can’t find a 17″ walleye and you can’t get away from 17″ bass What happened 20 or so years ago ??? Mille Lacs was formed by glaciers and after thousands of years, altered by some

Walleye get netted every spring.
DNR only lets you keep the small walleye so they get taken out.
Walleye are typically fished for “food”, few eaters get released anymore.Smallies are not targeted by nets.
DNR does not make you take small ones only.
Smallies don’t typically get kept.March 22, 2013 at 5:31 pm #1155147DING DING DING !!!! We have a winner….. now somebody tell the DNR.
March 23, 2013 at 5:38 am #1155342Yes, the general consensus is correct that the decline in walleye population has by and large been caused by the actions of man(netting, spearing, hook & line). I think the knee jerk reaction by many bass and walleye fishermen has come after the DNR’s regs for 2013, which seem to point the blame of low walleye numbers towards bass, muskies, and northerns, when in fact humans have the largest impact hands down. I think everyone agrees that the best way to help walleyes on Mille Lacs is to decrease their harvest, especially to stop netting the breeding pop. during the spawn.
