I’m looking at a ’97 chev 1/2 ton, 140,000 miles, very good shape, has records and receipts for all maint. The guy is a certified mechanic and did his own work on the truck. I took it for a test ride and it’s nice, no leaks or drips and I was under it with a flashlight, doesn’t burn oil, overall it’s good for a ’97. He’s asking 5k I offered him 4k he’s firm on his price, BB says he’s a little high but I know the BB is more of a general price than anything. I’m not committed to this truck just interested in others opinions……good vehicle, too high priced? What do you think? thanks in advance

I would never pay more than BB for a vehicle unless it’s a custom built street rod or something of that nature. If there is not a ton of add ons you should be paying BB or less in my opinion

Regardless of how it looks it is still a 16 year old truck with high miles. I would leave him your number and tell him your offer at 4k stands and have a nice day.

I had a 96 that when I bought it had 60,000 miles on it, I gave $6000. And that was several years ago. I would say hes too high… go lower

After a quick search on craigslist I would say its worth 5k if its everything you say it is. On older vehicles the book sometimes can be high or low depending on the market. Looking around and comparing to what others are asking for similar vehicle is what I always do to base the price off of. Try meeting him in the middle?

In the fall of 2007, I traded off a 98 GMC. Problematic piece of junk. Anyway, the dealership gave me $5k knowing the 4WD was out of it. Speedo didn’t work, so no clue on miles. Over a 120K for sure.

Not sure this helps you decide, but any working 4WD extended cab in good shape is worth $5k in my opinion.

A good used older truck is hard to find. He is a little high but I don’t think he is too far off. Ask if he will slpit the difference or leave him your number if he don’t get what he wants to call you.

Another thing to keep in mind is I beleive that 96 was the first year that chevy came out with the vortec engine, the early vortecs (late 90’s) would have things like trannys and water pumps go out on them around 160,000.

Now if you find a 95 like I have they have the 5.7 350. 95 was the last year they had that motor and it is a work horse, my mechanice tells me I should be able to get 300,000 out of that motor no problem.

MOPARS are not GMs, that might be a factor too.
