Gaining 7 mil in cap room. I’d release Winfield all day long. Sad to see him go, but the dude is almost my age.

This IS a good move. Not that we have anyone else who is nearly effective..

You only gain 7mil if you dont have to pay someone to replace him, unfortunately the vikes dont have that option
March 12, 2013 at 6:01 pm #1151272This is a tough pill to swallow.
Winfield has been the heart and soul of the Vikings defense for the last 9 years. $7.5 mil is alot of money to shell out to a slot corner in the waning ages of his career but he still graded out as a one of the better corners in the NFL.
Speilman must have something big brewing. Could we see Revis in purple?
machinePosts: 98March 12, 2013 at 6:21 pm #1151280Neither one-they are going to win or lose based on their run game and defense. Winfield is the heart of that D. He’s the toughest guy on the field everytime he steps foot.

See, I just don’t see any of the big free agent WRs wanting to play with Ponder. If anything, the guy regressed throughout last season until he was just a warm body handing the ball off to AP..

You save up $7 million to improve that position, and at the point Winfield was in his career, that will not be very difficult.
jmewelterPosts: 12March 12, 2013 at 7:55 pm #1151310You can’t expect them to hang on to a guy like Percy harvin, he was cancer and only would’ve gotten worse this year. I’d expect they will resign Winfield. Not sure if spielman will make any big splashes in free agency. He’s more of a draft day guru

Really? The Vikings give guys like Cook 2 million a year because they cant find a corner. Dumping a guy with Winfields skills will not benefit the D in any way. Even if they only get another year out of Winfield he would be worth it. Now Cook is our premier corner in a division with Rodgers, Cutler and Bradford, light us up boys!!! Winfield had 0 touchdowns thrown on him last year, not bad for an old man
March 12, 2013 at 9:47 pm #1151354I think Winfield will find the market for 7 million dollar 36 year old corners is very limited. Cripes, even a guy like Revis isn’t worth that much per year.
It’s too bad they two couldn’t come up with a fair number for him to retire on.
March 12, 2013 at 10:36 pm #1151366Are the Vikes still here in MN? Didn’t we tell them to go elsewhere? Oh wait, that was a dream. The reality is they raped MN for a new stadium.

That is indeed a difficult transition, migrated to WI 25 + years ago and am still a Viking’s fan. Growing more tolerant though! “When in Rome…… !
