If you want to stop cheap shots in all sports then a simple rule change will do it. Suspend the offending player for as long as the hurt player is out of action. In addition, the offending player loses his salary for the duration he is out. In addition, the offending players team may not make a roster addition during that time. They must play short a man. In addition, the offending players team is fined a matching amount of the lost salary.

This is for any injury that results in a player losing time (additional games). It does not need to be a blatant foul.

It in effect becomes a eye for a eye PLUS.

the problem is then if crosby accidentally takes out a 4th liner, his injury might last a long time.

The offending player already loses the salary for games missed during a suspension.

I’ve been looking for video of the shot on Zucker, but can’t find anything. Got a link?

As a novice hockey fan, I ask this question. Why in the heck didn’t someone level a Duck in the 3rd period?

I’m thinking that very same question will be addressed in the Wild locker room today. I wonder what the Broadstreet Bullies of the 70’s might have done?

With the game as close as it was and playing one of the better teams in the NHL they were not going to take a penalty. I’m sure many guys wanted to but it wasn’t going to happen.

The good thing is that these guys have excellent memories. The next game with the Ducks that get’s out of hand you can guarantee that one of the Ducks will go down.

Perry isn’t known as a Dirty player either, which changes it a little. I believe Rupp and Konopka were barking at them a little bit.

I also don’t think many of the Wild players actually saw the hit. I read Falks and Brodziak or Clutterbuck’s lips when the camera was on them at the bench and one asked Falk if he saw it, and Falk shook his head. It was kind of behind the play.

Had the Wild capitalized on their chances, it probably would have gotten a little rougher.

    Perry loses $115,135.12 in salary.

Perry also did wait and see if Zucker would make it off the ice on his own, before retreating to the locker room after being tossed. He also had someone get the word to him that he was sorry.

Thanks for explaining. On the surface I was very disappointed that the Wild appeared to “let it go”.

Just watched the replay this morning. What a reckless play. If he hits him as he is releasing the puck, it isn’t so bad, but he has to recognize you can’t hit a guy that late after he released the puck.

I expect a big bounce back game by the Wild tonight, curse be damned.

I didn’t even know Grandlund had been sent down until I read the paper.

He’ll be fine. He’s getting over his sophomore slump in his freshman year.

Man-bear-pigs are on some kind of roll. Pretty impressive lately. How about Backs? A lot of weight on his shoulders.

I love Backs. Always have. I defended him win people have called for Harding/Theodore/etc to replace him.

His stats sure have been jobbed this year. A few more flukey goals than the average goalie sees. Then tonight the ref calls a needless penalty and he gets one more against his goals against average in the waning seconds.

Looks like we might have a couple dozen years of our #1 and #2 defenseman battling each other for the Norris trophy.

Those national broadcasters were really talking Brodin up, as well they should. Amazing how poised he is. I think I have seen 1 panic mistake the whole year.

Suter should be in the running for the league MVP. It isn’t a coincidence as soon as he turned it around, so did the team.

I hope the team doesn’t make a move at the deadline. Even for Butch who is a FA at the end of the year. Keep the depth, keep the prospects.

I agree. No need to move Butch even if he sits out a lot. Gives them a solid option in case someone goes down. Hate to see them give up anything for a trade. Plus they’ll lose Butch’s salary after this year. Shouldn’t be hard to find a replacement at his salary in the fa market.

Pug, you still thinking Buchard is on the trading block? 6 assists and 1 goal (game winner) in the last 5 games. His second line is on fire. I can’t see the Wild messing with that. Butch is back, maybe only for the rest of the season, but he’s back. Give us the spin-o-rama just one more time.

The Wild dominated Detoilet last night. Backs had them totally shut down in the first and from there the offense took over.

Again, though, I don’t think the Wild are extracting enough of a toll for dirty hits. An obviously targeted head shot against Coyle by Niklas Kronwall, he should have recieved a beat down as soon as he got out of the box. The Wild need to start pounding anyone who lays down a dirty hit, make them watch their back instead of the puck for a while. Hit him with a heat-seeking Clutterbuck missile and freaking make him pay.

I have no idea if he is. GMs generally don’t like losing an asset for nothing. I thought he was on the block when they were scratching him. There is no sense paying a guy in the final year of his contract to watch from the pressbox. But I think Fletch will stand pat and not make any trades. It wouldn’t make any sense.

I don’t know what exactly you want the team to do in retaliation. This isn’t the 1980s. And it wasn’t a dirty hit other than his stick was up high. Did you see the replays of Kronwall doing that about 6-8 times to other guys? How do you target a guys head with your butt/hip?

I also thought the Wild looked very good. I agree Butch needs to stay. That line looks great. Fun to see Cullen having success, even though he beat my High school alma mater at State. He works very hard all the time. I hope Backstom can stay healthy he is a key to this team. Suter, Brodin one of the best D pair in the league. Suter deserves a lot of credit for Brodin’s success. If you can’t count on your partner you can’t take the offensive chances. LET’S GO wILD!

Kronwall’s shoulder got Coyle under the chin. He was trying to make it look like a hip check, but then he throws his shoulder up to hit Coyle in the face.

    Here’s a good replay:
    http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/niklas-kronwall-demolishes-charlie-coyle-hit-head-shot-010007207–nhl.html

The refs got the call wrong in terms of it wasn’t high sticking. But only because he never actually got him with the stick, it wasn’t for lack of trying to get him with the stick.

Good job to the Wild power play for ramming it up Detoilets @ss.

I stand corrected. I guess I wasn’t paying that close attention at the time. He definitely missed with his hip and through his shoulder right at his head. Should be a 2 game suspension.

Just did a search and found out no hearing. Here’s the explanation.

    Quote:

As for why Kronwall escaped punishment — according to the Star-Tribune’s Mike Russo, the NHL felt Kronwall hit Coyle with “full body contact.”

If you hit a guy full body the worse that happens is he is stopped dead in his tracks, not have your feet taken out from under you.

Not lost in all of this the head of player safety is Brendan Shanahan who played many years for the Wings.

This “department” does not do itself any favors by being inconsistent. Still better than Colin Campbell though.

    Still rollin!

Good sound game with a little puck luck. I don’t know about anyone else, but I don’t get very nervous when the puck is in the d zone. There always seems to be a defender ready to challenge the guy with the puck.

    Why aren’t you fishing?

I am so glad to see Backstrom finally rewarded with a shut out. My fantasy team is too.

You got that right about when the other team is pressuring. I think early in the year the players must have felt when a team was pressing us and controlling our zone, they were going to score. If they didn’t feel that, I know I did. Now, I am not bothered by it. I expect them to break up the play and move up ice.

This was a good game considering it was the first back after being successful on the road. Could have easily been a let down game.

I feel I owe an apology to Mike Yeo as he seems to have the team rolling. I was an early doubter and it seems that the Wild are going nowhere but up. They now have very good players that can not make it into the line up, what a change. Go Wild!

You and about 10,000 other fans. I was even waivering since they seemed to have done just about everything and the only thing left was fire the coach.

Wild now are a +8 in goal differential. That’s pretty impressive. Now 20th in the league with 2.53 G/G. 4th in the league with 2.33 G/A.

Suter should win the Norris AND the Hart. First in TOI per game average. And in scoring and assists among defensemen.

Since you were willing to apologize, I owe one to Suter. Not that I didn’t think he was good, but I didn’t think he was an elite defenseman or if his play was boosted by Shea Weber.

Boat is buried in the back yard and nothing much happening under the ice. Waiting for that ice to come off the rainy. If the snow melts enough to get the boat out, I’ll probably try to hit p4 before the rainy.

Besides the Wild have been satisfying to watch.

I owe nobody an apology. Unless I’m making as much as Yeo or any player for that matter.

Gotta keep the rally cat thread going!

The Wild look pretty good for having an off night.

Can you imagine how good their pp would be with a good rh shooter? If they make a move at the deadline, I’d hope its a high end rh forward.
