This right here is why the US Postal Service is losing money. A customer contacted me and said his package had not arrived, I checked the tracking number. Here is its route. Green dot is where it started, blue dot is where it was delivered. Red follows its path. How much $$$$$ in fuel was burned for this trip you recon?

Probably nothing… trucks were going anyways. Just like flying from MPLS to AZ, direct flight $600, or fly from MPLS to Atlanta to AZ for $340. It is just a package. UPS and FED Ex do the same thing USPS was built for different times/things, they are outdated.

Is this unusual when you are spending government money?

The direct flight is for convenience and for those time limited. Premium service.

Connections for guys that are on a budget and have all day to fly.

    The charge more….because they can.

They are supposed to be self sustaining…. The problem is odd contracts for hauling etc. Motley fool sez smart management would turn it into gold mine.

Exactly. A package could care less how many connections it makes or how conveinent it is. More fuel or less fuel, the USPS has “Priority Delivery” also, this box obviously flew standby coach

Re-think that. If this package is going 300 miles out of its way, its taking room in the truck that could be filled with a package that needs to go that 300 miles in the correct direction. Now that package that ships on the next truck is taking space where another package could go. Now I’m sure this isnt the first package that goes west to go east, so if you have enough of them going the wrong way you will have a truck load. A wasted truck load. At the price of fuel, a semi going 300 miles in the wrong direction is a big loss. A loss we have to pay for with increased prices.

That probably made no sense at all, I cant seem put what I’m thinking into the correct words. I hope you understand what I am trying to say.. which is every wasted space on the trucks cost them money.

Again, put it into the same scenario of a person taking a flight. Pay more, fly first class and get the direct flight. Don’t pay it and they won’t throw you in the seat anyways, just because it is empty and will take less fuel. They will not micro-manage each box, shipping standard rates. That costs money too…hence “Priority” pricing. Is that quite the extreme path that box took, yes. But it is not why USPS is broke

All companies do this. I work for UPS. If you ship something overnight from Rochester to Brookings SD……it goes on a truck to msp….then a plane to Louisville…..then on to SD.

and having the whole business model revolve around putting a letter sized package in a box at the same time everyday and then having that replaced pretty much “overnight” in business terms, by the click of a mouse and an email

I pay more and more to ship the same boxes each year. Remember $5 flat rate? yeah not anymore.
