Hey Pug heres something to do to get up front and close to nesting finches when thier in thier nesting and mateing colors, which by the way are very colorful. We used to have an aluminum porch awning over the front door and landing. We on a whim I bought a couple Boston ferns and hung them by the outside framework that held the aluminum sheet roofing in place. They hung down and when the finches found them they had grown a little so they decided to nest in each one of them, there were two ferns in seperate plastic baskets.

We seen the finches after they nested by simple going out the door and about head height thier they were. One would be sitting on the eggs and the other finding food for the other nesting bird that was keeping the eggs warm, then they would take turns for eachother, both warming the eggs.

We watched them do this until the eggs hatched and then it was both parents going all day long finding food for the new chicks. A wonderful thing for the plant growth was when the chicks deficated the parents would pull or kick it out of the nest and it ended up right on top of the soil.

When the water ran off the aluminum sheet roofing and ran partially onto the soil that held the plants, the ferns exploded in density and width.

My neighbor Lyle raises orchids and has dozens of diffrent kinds and goes to the Milwaukee orchid get together atleast once a year and buys many diffrent new additions for his collection.

He had been driving by and was noticeing the growth of these Boston ferns and one day said those ferns are huge, what did you do to get them that big. I told him that the finches had nested there and kicked out the waist from the chicks and that was the fertilizer that made the plants explode. Our porch awning was 8′ long and we had two ferns and just those two ferns completely closed the width of the awning, these ferns were georgeous and hung maybe 3′ down, they were just beautiful and full of the rich green that comes from healthy plants.

If anyone wants to get very healthy and wide Boston ferns get them as soon as they come up forsale and hang them right out front of your door or window. Put a decent sized plant hanger to hold them and if the nesting birds find them those plants explode with lush green growth and get huge.

As soon as I get the front framing done as a sun roof I’m going to make sure I hang atleast 4 too 6 plants as thier growth is fenominal and lush and green, very pretty and impressive. Another cool thing to do for our nesting birds and right outside your window.

They do love Boston Ferns. We had a pair nest in one of ours, but then something got the eggs.

I also saw a sign at Lunds above one of their Boston Ferns asking people to not disturb the nesting birds.
