I am going to try trolling for some of these beasts this year and looking for some info on rod and reel choice. I only cast for them but want to put my grandpa and dad on fish. They however cannot cast for them due to health issues. Looking to troll double 10’s and big bodied divers. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

We troll for large Muskies here on the Bay of Green Bay and we use several different trolling set ups but by far one of my favorite trolling rigs are a 7’6 medium heavy fast action St.Croix Musky rod with a Shimano Tecota 600 series reel with 40 or 50lb test monofilament.

I’ve had good luck with a couple of Tooth Tamer rods, both casting and trolling, using a Shimano Calcutta 400b reel.

I haven’t had much success trolling double tens. You will give your equipment a workout because of the drag of those big blades. You’ll want to use a heavy rod. It seems like I pick up too many weeds and that means reeling in the double tens while still trying to troll. Not bad if you only do it a few times. It sucks to do all day. I’ve also had trouble picking up a little weed when trolling bucktails and having it twist the crap out of my line. I prefer using my toro winch when trolling as oppose to the HS toro. Probably because I’m a wuss and it is easlier to reel in.

If I was only going to use the rod for trolling, I wouldn’t waste alot of money on it. If you plan to use it for trolling and casting, spend away.
