I have ordered a St. Croix Legend Elite 5566MLF. This rod will get extensive use. What do you all recommend for a quality, durable reel? Also, best place to purchase the reel.

    Thank you.

Pflueger supreme xt or patriarch would pair well. Even the plain supreme would be nice. I assume jigging is its intended purpose? A size 25 or 30 would be just about right. Haven’t seen many deals oit there recently. I would imagine you’ll start seeing them in the coming weeks.

Quantum Smoke 15 is an awesome reel. I have a couple of the 25 size but for that size rod I would go with the 15. But any of the quantum models are nice. Check the energy pti, smoke, or the EXO. Depending on your budget, I don’t think there are better reels on the market. But there are many nice reels out there.

Pending your budget and quality expectations, look at the Catalyst size 10, up to a 20. If you want the best and lightest, the EXO has a $30 rebate until March 31st. I just ordered a couple more of these. They are super light weight!

I’ll give my vote for the Shimano Stradic CI4F. I have four in the 2500 series. Smooth casting and awesome drag. As far as best deals I would try E-Bay. Seems like they are about $25 cheaper.

e-bay or the upcoming sports-show in Mpls. At the show – negociate – negociate – negociate. You can always save big $$$ on rods and reels there and you do not have to wait until Sunday to do it.
NOW is the best time of the year to buy reels on e-bay too. This time of year seems to present the lowest prices of the year from my experience. I just bought a new Revo Gen3 STX and NOBODY could match or beat the price – tax fee and no shipping to boot!

The most durable spinning reels I’ve ever used have been Daiwa Hardbodyz. Quite reasonably priced as well. They’re heavier but will outlast Shimanos.

My Legend Elites of a few years have Shimano Sustains on them back when those reels were about $200 only.
