Well…we FINALLY got PJ out ice fishing. This winter has been one busy weekend after another for us.
We hit a lake close to home in hopes to find some active crappies….size wasn’t a concern since we wanted to get PJ on numbers and we hit the JACKPOT!!!
Never having ice fished this lake we made our way to the group of houses then ventured past them 75-100 yards to have a quiet area to ourselves. I punched a hole to ensure we were in the main basin and the Marcum lit up like a christmas tree. I punched a dozen more holes in the area so we could hop around. Heidi and PJ set up the house on hole #1 and started catching fish while I was drilling.
I asked PJ which hole I should start in and he directed me to one and he was spot on. The crappies were on fire this afternoon, they were all small averaging probably 7″ so they were all quickly released but we had a hoot.
Heidi and PJ were using eurolarve and I was using plastics. I started with a black shrimp and eventually switched to a glow wedgie just to see if that would work too and it did. The fish didn’t hit it as aggressively as the black shrimp but it worked just as well.
All said and done….we iced in the neighborhood of 100 crappies in about 3 hours biggest one being around 10″.
PJ caught 6 all by himself, he let the jig down set the hook and landed the fish with nothing more than a little coaching…that was the best part of the day for me. My little fishin buddy is growing up and he did great today.
The IDO sweatshirt is spectacular!! So glad I bought one…I might have to get another.
