Well my wife is due for our third in early May, but she has a tendency to pop early so need to get things in order. My name is Nick Hammer as my profile states and fairly new to this community still, though have come to respect most opinions of the members who frequent this site so please give me some candid advice on this name for a possible son. I have complete naming rights to the child if its a boy which I hope to heaven it is BC I’m outnumbered 3 to 1 right now in the house.
Is Jack Hammer a legitimate name or too far reaching BC of the obvious. I think it really is a solid strong name but I am just not sure. Can’t see going into a job interview saying Hello I am Jack Hammer nice to meet you! but then again instant icebreaker. I have worked on a construction site most my adult life so dont know how it would be taken in other fields. Opinions please and be honest its hard to offend me.

Not sure I’d want to introduce myself as Jack Hammer. Might be fun at the bar, but thats about it.

Didn’t there used to be a DJ in town in the 1980’s on KQ named Tack Hammer?

Its a great name if you can guarantee he will be a middle linebacker in the NFL, otherwise its a definite no go. First impression would be rather awkward when you introduce your name as jack hammer

I prefer what Mom and Dad come up with when they sit down over (whatever) to discuss and decide it together.

    Enjoy your decision made together!

Might be a Cool name as an Adult, I think it could be a little tough as a early teen, teenager.

    IMHO

I vote no. Is it worth having the little kid live with it all of his life for your temporary amusement??

I would really hope you don’t think this is for amusement of any length of time. Its a straight forward question and if I was to amuse myself I would go with James suggestion of Arman, but that wouldnt work either I’m an old spice guy.

With a last name like yours it would be hard and you have to be careful so it sounds good. Give two letters names like TJ Hammer or TC Hammer. You could honor both grandpa’s First letters. Just a thought!!!

I don’t doubt you – but perception from the public that the kid will have to face through life may say otherwise. Just my thoughts.

Oh – and CONGRATS on the new son!!

I think that is the same as naming one of my children crow or candy… Would not bode well for the school years or the adult years IMO.

If you really like Jack, you could always go with Jackson and he could go by Jack as an adult if he wanted. I voted no though. I like Rusty or Maxwell. Max Hammer has a good ring to it.

I vote nay to Jack. The full name has connotations that may be detrimental to him all his life, especially when he is young. When in college, I knew a guy that was named after a famed football personality, he was a brilliant, but frail young man, definitely not an athlete. He attempted suicide one Sunday in his dorm room. I believe it was because he didn’t live up to his name or his father’s expectations. Are your sure it will be a boy? If not, the question may be moot. On the lighter side, regardless of what name you choose, whether a boy or girl, I’d vigorously recommend you do not use ’Ninny‘!

I do really appreciate everyone’s comments so thank you much for them.

We did not find out the sex of the baby so all this is research at this point.

I guess I am privy to the reactions of my last name through my life and honestly their isn’t any perception at all. Great name for sports, and was never twisted into a joke through childhood. I thought about it and what is a 10yr old gonna say about it. Not much to go off of other than you are a tool.
Maybe I equate it a lil with Mr.Cash and a boy named Sue. Gonna have no other option than to be tough when growing up, and in this new environment of city life where I see many “metro” men nowadays I really like that idea.

Sue Hammer ought to do it then (only if it is a boy though, for a girl, then Jack)

I actually like the name Jack, but not in this case for aforementioned reasons. It was a former nickname of mine back in my Harley days and it is embedded in my IDO Nom De Guerre.
