6 fish seems a little high, I can’t see that passing anytime soon. Maybe shoot for 3?
josh aPosts: 588February 24, 2013 at 9:11 pm #1145211For the record, I would support the 6 fish limit, I just don’t see it going from 1 over 21″ to keeping 6
February 24, 2013 at 9:15 pm #1145398Does it really make a difference? Is there really that many people out there that will keep 6 Smallmouths anyway.
February 24, 2013 at 9:20 pm #1145399Why would a person keep a Smallie? Just make them a one limit for those guys that insist on killing a fish for skin mount.

The smallmouth fishing on Mille Lacs can be flat out easy and 6 smallmouth 16-21″ would be a fair amount of meat. There are certainly people that would go out there with as many kids as they could fit in a boat and keep piles of them. Not sure the exact number of people that would, but people would.
bioguyPosts: 128February 24, 2013 at 10:15 pm #1145419I’ve eaten smallmouth once, and it was meh. The majority of those targeting sm on ml wouldn’t keep them if they could. A few people will and I say let them, they are voracious predators of both small fish and invertebrates. I think some form of management is needed.

agreed
February 24, 2013 at 10:36 pm #1145426I’d be in favor of removing the special reg for smallies on Mille Lacs and going to state regs. Mostly for area tourism and resort reasons. No special regs will bring in tourneys and out of state fishermen. I think the current bass regs scare off business. I also agree some fish need to be culled out of the system.

Because there are a HECK of a lot of fishermen, both resident and non that only get out a very limited amount each year and will kill EVERY legal fish they can to bring home. IT happens a lot and good for them! I am amazed every year up on kab when I see people cleaning a couple small walleyes, a few hammer handle pike, a perch or two, and a few smallies of whatever size they caught. In talking with them, I have learned they are generally people that don’t get to go fishing a ton and they appreciate EVERY mouthful of fish they can bring home from their vacation. It makes me thankful to be able to live where I do and to be able to be picky enough to only eat walleyes whenever I choose. For those can’t aren’t so blessed, I am happy for them when they can bring a fish home.

February 25, 2013 at 12:16 am #1145458With the way that lake is managed now it won’t take them long and they will have the rest of the species mismanaged just like they have with the Walleye.
February 25, 2013 at 1:24 am #1145473i would like to see the lake go back to state regs for the smallmouth. all those big smallies are part of the problem. mismanagement of the lake all the way around. as someone said, might bring in some bass tournaments, maybe even a BASS with all the big names.

desperadoPosts: 3010February 25, 2013 at 1:48 am #1145479Smallies are already mis-managed on this lake.
A return to the statewide reg would be a step in the right directionFebruary 25, 2013 at 3:57 am #1145498Deleted at a mods request.
They feel I’m missinfg the funny side of it.
FryDog62Posts: 3696February 25, 2013 at 1:15 pm #1145541Shouldn’t be anything but “CPR” for smallmouth IMO. No need to eat smallies and if you catch one over 21 inches and want to mount it, get a carbon replica.

Agree! Good post. I’d also add that for kids of families like these, keeping a few fish increases the entire fishing experience.

They also pump millions of dollors into our economy every year. Most of them are a hell of alot more “Mn.Nice” than most natives.
Mille lacs is screwed up because of mis-management over the years.desperadoPosts: 3010February 25, 2013 at 1:24 pm #1145547Quote:

and if the lake is out of balance (smally vs wally population being too heavily weighted toward smallies) . . then what
jeff_hubertyInactivePosts: 4941February 25, 2013 at 2:35 pm #1145574I don’t see any reason why not to eat them.
In fact, I don’t see any reason why all spieces shouldn’t be reguaded as table fare, if anyone chooses to do so.

yup; if pickled correctly, it’s almost impossible to taste the difference of smallie from musky

Do, could you say a little more on this? You want to keep it C&R?
FryDog62Posts: 3696February 25, 2013 at 6:00 pm #1145647I’m sure I’m in the minority here, but I don’t think the rise in the smallie population on Mille Lacs has been at the the expense of the walleyes…

For many years, the Mn. biologists preached, loudly, that anything done to increase the smallmouth population at Lake Mille Lacs would lead to disaster….Dennis Shupp included–who was one of the most respected walleye biologists/experts in the country. Even just 5-6 years ago, I met with the MN. DNR fisheries dept. head about building breakwaters in front of public accesses in a couple places around the lake. He said, loudly, NO WAY as that would lead to better smallmouth habitat and we surely do not want to improve the smallie population. So who’s right? The DNR speaks and acts with forked tongue?
I say eliminate them–period!! I agree with Mr. Shupp!
desperadoPosts: 3010February 25, 2013 at 7:05 pm #1145661maybe we should encourage the practice of netting them and spearing them during their spawning time

I’m with you. If you chose not to eat them, fine, but is there really a need to ridicule those that do?
I think asparagus is digusting, but I’m fine if you want to eat it!

I got real issues with guys that look down on others for mounting the actual fish they caught!! So you never ever keep a fish to eat? and look the same at everyone that does?
