I have been home sick with the flu yesterday and today. TV SUCKS! I am bored out of my mind. I don’t get how people can willingly not go to work daily.

I hear ya. I was home 2 days abut 2 weeks ago with the flu and it was brutal. I was able to work from home so I was not completely bored and still got a few things done.
Hang in there and get well
February 21, 2013 at 4:38 pm #1144366Seat at the table drinking coffee watching people going to work, read the newpaper, grandkids, hobbies, house work, read web-sites b.s.,more hobbies, ice fishing with some more old farts, summer time fishing, watch the birds, watch the river roll down and count my saving , and the days are to short to get all the stuff done that I should of did yesterday. Man I could go on and on!!
February 21, 2013 at 4:42 pm #1144368You can’t go to work and get unemployment, EBT, Heating Assistance, Free Cell Phone , free Fuel, free Clothing, free internet, Free Medical, Housing assistance, Child Assistance, etc.
You need to learn how to play Video Games and do drugs. I have heard that makes doing nothing more enjoyable.
If I had to sit at home – I would go volunteer my time and DO SOMETHING!!!!!
Amazing some people can DO NOTHING for years.

February 21, 2013 at 4:51 pm #1144371When it is you that are sick it sucks and time stands still. When you are doing the “taking care”….time flies by really fast.
Hope you get better sooner than later!

February 21, 2013 at 5:04 pm #1144380Wade I’m glad to know that you’re at home with nothing to do I’ve got about 200 blade bait to paint about 4-500 jigs to make an a pnd plenty of streamers to get tied up this spring sol I’ll be sending all the crap up to you and let you get busy
blackbayPosts: 699February 21, 2013 at 5:05 pm #1144381There’s a big difference between being home sick and being home on a day off/weekend. I know my days are filled with things to do besides TV.
nhammInactiveRobbinsdalePosts: 7348February 21, 2013 at 5:05 pm #1144382Maybe it is the fact that you are not being productive, simply BC you can’t. Like most of us it is instilled in us to be good productive members of our society and sitting at home vomiting would make anyone feel worthless.
February 21, 2013 at 5:09 pm #1144146I have burnt through all my sick days already this year. Being sick sucks. The only good thing I will say is I havent touched any of my vacation so once open water hits im looking at some good fishing trips to come.

I don’t think I could even try to be unemployed for 3 years!! There’s work out there if you want it.

Guess it helps if you enjoy your home. I try to adjust my schedule to get a “no going anywhere day” at least once a week. Those days are fantastic. No traffic to deal with. no idiots to deal with at stores. Dont even have to put pants on if I dont want. Always plenty to do at home. Coffee to drink. Get caught up on some reading. Watch the birds at the feeder or even just the vehicles coming and going in the neighborhood. Throw in a few business phone calls and getting caught up on office stuff and its a great day. If all goes well might even get a nap in.
Staying home cuts down on money spent to. no more running to the store because someone didnt plan the milk schedule right or out of bread. Tough teats. It can wait until tomorrow. Often enjoy the stories from my mother in law and her brothers about growing up 10 miles outside of Aitkin and going to town maybe once a month. Those folks had it great.
For you sir I would suggest hopping in the car and taking a quick trip around the 694/494 loop about 4pm. That should get you feeling right again.

You are looking for a job that does not exist, or not trying very hard.February 21, 2013 at 6:33 pm #1144409I had knee surgery yesterday so I am home for a while. I can’t drive or barely get up to whiz. I’ve been getting sore just from laying. I anticipate I will need to get out and about sooner than later. Tv is rocking though. DVR is in full play today. Wish it was March Madness time. It would make sitting on the couch all day much better.

Awesome!!!!I was just watching TV this AM and saw a job fair, an ad for 90 construction jobs, etc. I see Help Wanted signs all the time.
3 Years? Give me a break. You must love staying home or are injured. Might be time to adjust your expectations about what you are qualified for and what your going to get paid for.
If someone told me they were out of work for 3 years, in an interview – I would never hire them. Clearly an expectations disconnect.

I have an ACL repair (total replacement) in my future. I am dreading it for that reason. Six weeks of immobility does not sound like something I can survive.

There is work out there. I hate when people use that line. Family included. Just need to lower your standards on what you think you are worth.
February 21, 2013 at 8:18 pm #1144452I work construction! (masonry) so been hanging around the house for a couple weeks now.. in the last 2 weeks i decided to become a honey bee farmer so Ive build 10 hives 4 top bars and 6 Lang hives dont know nothing about it but I’m sure after i get stung a few times it should shorten the learning curve! lol after making my hives and frames i sat around with nothing to do so I ended up spending a bunch of money on fruit trees so my bees will have something to do.. then I thought I’m going to need a honey extractor so I’m now in the process of building a 12 frame stainless steel automatic honey extractor..
I also started clearing out a big area for my new fruit trees cut down about 50 or so boxelders to expand my area for my new trees..
I dont know sitting home aint so bad but sure is expensive…
starvin pilgrimPosts: 335February 21, 2013 at 9:48 pm #1144492If you’re in your mid fifties, worked the same construction trade for 35 years and became a victim of the economy, three years was the norm. for many. When businesses saw my age and the fact I was a const. worker they pretty much knew when worked picked up I’d begone and got no call backs. The only jobs available were part time, min. wage. Luckily. I saved my money and got by okay. So any of you clowns that say that there is work out there if you want it, I hope what happened to me happens to you. P.S. I got called back a month ago.
February 21, 2013 at 10:02 pm #1144496It’s different circumstances for everyone. Different age, skill sets, and knowledge level. I had closed my business and worked for another builder for about 6 years. Market tanked and my position was cut, along with 75% of everyone else. I had talked to about 100 different builders that I would consider working for in the following month. Same story from anyone one of them that knew me. Way over qualified, worth too much money, and IF they could have hired me, they thought I would be bored because the job was “beneath” me. Well, I had no choice but to re-open my own business and get the party started all over again. Heck of a lot of hours put in that I don’t get paid for.
But that doesn’t work for everyone. Not everyone has the ability or skill sets to jump into starting a business (especially in a down market). But, you do what you have to and learn to eat crow once in awhileFebruary 21, 2013 at 10:13 pm #1144504I retired two years ago and willingly enjoy not going to work every day. I have plenty of hobbies, walk the dog daily, go to the gym, shovel snow spend time on the Internet. Never missed going to work for one second, 37 years in the packing house was more than enough.
February 21, 2013 at 10:51 pm #1144518Yep. Seems like some pretty easy comments to make when talking about someone else going to work. Would like to see what you guys would do when offered work for maybe half what you where making and no benefits. Throw on top of that the option to stay home with pay. Yea, lets see all you guys turn that down to run out to those walmart and SA gas station jobs.
Not saying its right but it is what it is.
February 21, 2013 at 11:33 pm #1144544To everyone that has put me down on this post about me NOT wanting to work, you are just plain IGNORANT!!! I had a nice long response to the posts but decided not to vent here… You only know me from here and I hardly post…You have NO idea how much of a struggle it has been and continues to be every day. Thanks for your great insite about me not wanting to work or not hiring because of a lengthy layoff. You have been most helpful! May you somdeay be in my position so I can rub salt into your wounds! Paul
February 21, 2013 at 11:45 pm #1144554I’ve been off work since November, and yes Wade, it does suck being at home.
Some pretty ignorant comments on this thread. I could have found work by now but not in my field. And I don’t want to sign up for an honest job and then have to ask for time off to attend interviews, job fairs, networking events. I’ve probably worked just as hard finding work as I did while working. Well not quite, but you can’t commit to part-time work and do a decent job if you need the flexibility to find what you are truly interested in.

February 22, 2013 at 1:09 am #1144594couple days watching tv you should be able to to find to find some one to sue and you should never have to go back to work again. very depressing tv during the day or late night,
nhammInactiveRobbinsdalePosts: 7348February 22, 2013 at 1:32 am #1144605A man who wants to provide for himself and his family if applicable will do what he has to do to make a living. Sorry guys but I was in that position, but actually took a table saw through three fingers and couldn’t do my construction job for about 18months. Luckily I had a friend of the family with a car detail shop so I washed windows and vacuumed carpets with one freaking hand for that time and got through with other odd and ends until the day I could return to normal work. Could have taken the time off and sat on my butt and collected but I can’t stand the idea of others supporting my family. This wasn’t meant to be a ooohhh good for me but rather if anyone says its easy to say from an outsider, I’m not and it is easy to say your butts need a change in attitude. I would think most small businesses owners would agree the taxes and unemployment and all that other jazz is high enough.
targamanInactiveWilton, WIPosts: 2759February 22, 2013 at 12:50 pm #1144716Well, back at it today. I guess I don’t mind work that bad if the other option is being stuck on the couch at home.
