Ok, I’ll join the list of people whining and toss a rant out here that has been bugging me for a long time.

I’m not a commercial driver but I probably do a little more than average. Last year I put just shy of 40K miles on my truck plus the use of my cars. So naturally the more your on the road, your gonna see some pretty stupid crap.

But here are a few things I encounter on a very regular basis and for the love of God, can not figure out what people are thinking.

    1. Merging onto an interstate. I was taught the vehicle on the “on-ramp” has the responsibility to “merge” into traffic. So if traffic is going 65-70, you should be up to an appropriate speed to ease into traffic. Now I understand existing traffic on the Interstate moving over, speeding up, or slowing down a bit. So why on earth do people creep down the on ramp and merge into 65 mph traffic at 35-45 mph??? I’m sure a few of them had to clean the chocolate stains out of their shorts when they look in the rear view mirror and see a 8000# truck pulling a 3500# trailer load doing 60 mph and gaining speed, just to hit horn and slam on the breaks. Believe it or not, the engineers at the DOT gave you plenty of distance to get the rubber band wound up tight enough to get your prius up to legal speed.

    2. Exiting the interstate. I try to be a good driver and not hog the left lane when I’m driving below the average speed of the wolf pack. So often when pulling a trailer, I’m in the right lane and I fully understand that there will be people driving below 65 mph. Impeding traffic is more than 10 under, so if I need to get around someone driving 55, I’m ok with that. But why do people hit their brakes and slow down to 45 (or slower) a half mile before the beginning of an off ramp. Again, the engineers at the DOT designed plenty of length on the off ramp so that you can decelerate your vehicle AFTER you exit. I’m baffled why people feel compelled to prematurely break because the exit is a mile away?????? Do these people not look in their rear view mirrors and see the 10 vehicles behind them breaking?? Then, I find myself laughing when they slowed to 35/40mph to “exit” then accelerate up the off ramp.

    3. Was there something I missed in the Driver’s Ed class that taught people that they MUST pass any truck on the road that is pulling a trailer? I am amazed at the utmost loss of common sense when people need to pass me and immediately make a right turn. Lets see – 10 to 14 thousand pounds Vs 3000# if I wasn’t able to control my vehicle. The transfer of energy just might knock the common sense out of their , back through their head, and through the windshield. More hilarious is the guy or woman that thinks their Corolla is going to out accelerate my truck. At three car lengths behind me, I can see them flipping me off. Really??? Or are you just expressing you scored a 1 on your IQ test

Ok all better until I drive on the interstate in the morning

My wife thinks I’m the only one that lets those exact same things “grind my gears”. Thanks for letting me know I’m not alone.

It also amazes me how many people STILL refuse / don’t know better than to move over a lane for troopers / police / emergency vehicles stopped at side of road. Most commonly it’s suits and soccer-mom-SUV’s that I see doing it. Chaps my hide!!

#1 gets the cake for me. Oh and after merging at 35mph into traffic they THEN floor the gas pedal and do 80mph!!!

Why do they drive 45 up the hill w/no pass zone ,on 2 lane roads and 60 down hill in passing zone?

Picture this one, here I am, chugging along right at or just below the posted limit, in the rt lane, my dually pulling the 5er with the boat behind. Here comes this debutant, wet nails and all, passes me, cuts in and then slams on the brakes so she can make the last 2′ of the off ramp. Usually takes me 3 minutes of steady rocking to break the suction on my seat cover. Just hate when they do that to me jerr

While a right turn is bad a LEFT turn really gets me going. There are times I’ve been ready to take a left turn too and open a can of whoop azz on them. Loaded trucks and trailers can be difficult to control when they don’t signal and just brake and turn left. It ain’t NASCAR boys and girls.

You forgot to say, what about pulling over in the median if you are having car trouble. Since when was that even considered the best place to pull over?

I suppose they saw some dummy do it once so they thought it was OK from there on out.

As the saying goes, you just can’t fix stupid.

As someone who commutes 84+ miles a day in the metro area, I’ve seen it all. I’ve seen it from truck drivers to little old ladies. Just today a semi driver with a tanker on back was using the better share of two lanes. I quickly got around him. Watching in my rearview mirror, he was trying to grab something off the passenger floor apparently. Last Friday a guy in a mini van was shooting gaps and weaving all over the road. As he passed me, he was clearly texting/reading the internet.

If I have the right attitude, most days this stuff rolls off my back. However, there are days when I shake my head and cuss my decision to live here. I can sure appreciate your observations.

    4. When people insist on driving in the left lane when they should be moving there over so I can get by. One day I know I am going to go to jail for rear ending someone on purpose.

the shear number of drivers(all ages, sexes, breeds, etc) really concentrating intently on text messaging while driving at ANY speed…. Unreal, saddening and unreal…. What makes it worse is the slap on the hands the text killers are getting. The longest sentence was like 2 years. WTF?

    Randy I love your RANT!
I cuss other drivers nearly every day and I don’t even have that far to drive. Recently I actually road with my wife and she didn’t signal a turn >damn near ended nearly 34 years of marriage! I said I hope you don’t drive like this all the time and told her how that SO pisses me off.
I just have to stop ranting> this is Randy’s rant….(but thank you)

Even worse than not being up to speed on the on ramp is when they feel they have to stop on the on ramp to wait for an opening. All while stopping the others on the on ramp so they can’t merge properly!!!!

Thanks RW, I live right off an Interstate and I see this stuff all the time. Sometimes I wonder if it is peoples eyesight in that they can’t tell for sure if this is their exit. But I see the texting drivers and drivers that make terrible decisions all the time.

The merging down the on-ramp just kills me every time. It’s so obvious!!

I really shouldn’t be shocked when my kid starts using the same colorful insults I use on other drivers. Calling someone a “big fat doodiehead” just doesn’t alleviate my anger like calling someone a “stupid BLEEP F&$@s%! BLEEPIN’ BLEEPER”

All of the above but what really ties my shorts in a knot is two cars travel side by side five miles down the freeway because one cruise control is thirty feet an hour faster than the other and he hasn’t got the sense to use the foot feed to get by and clear the left lane.

Seems to me that to many people think that they are so important that everyone else should get out of their way. Sounds like MN is going to try and make some money on this again by getting the ticket cameras back up and going. Might be adding them state wide.

    Abra,

That brings up another courtesy type thing I see too much of. Say you’re cruising a rural interstate doing say 70 and a guy comes from behind doing 71. As you both come up on the truck doing 65, instead of using the foot feet to cruise by, the SOB blocks you in the right lane so you have to cycle off your cruise control.

A simple burst of gas and you both continue on your way, with no slow downs.

    It’s just common sense.

I have mixed feelings about ticket cameras. If for not stopping I could handle it but if they use them for speeding I would feel like my rights were being violated.

    All good rants.

Another one is the guy/gal with “don’t pass-me-itis”….I’ve been approaching their vehicle at a good clip, only to have them match my speed as I try to pass…When it’s a woman,I assume she’s just trying to check me out. When it’s a guy,I assume he’s checking out my icefishing stuff in the bed of my truck,or the boat, snowmobile,or ATC that I’m towing.

But when I look over to give a WTF look, they’re staring straight ahead….Goose the pedal to pass, and guess what? They accelerate too.

Gotta admit, though. That doesn’t happen nearly as often as the folks who just can’t be behind a truck…I also drive a commercial motor vehicle – often with a loaded equipment trailer behind…Wanna speed past me just to hit the brakes?…especially approaching a stoplight? I had plenty of room between vehicles. The first car screwed me,the second created a downright hairy situation.

Of course I can stop 35,000lbs on a dime.
