Ok, I’ll join the list of people whining and toss a rant out here that has been bugging me for a long time.
I’m not a commercial driver but I probably do a little more than average. Last year I put just shy of 40K miles on my truck plus the use of my cars. So naturally the more your on the road, your gonna see some pretty stupid crap.
But here are a few things I encounter on a very regular basis and for the love of God, can not figure out what people are thinking.
1. Merging onto an interstate. I was taught the vehicle on the “on-ramp” has the responsibility to “merge” into traffic. So if traffic is going 65-70, you should be up to an appropriate speed to ease into traffic. Now I understand existing traffic on the Interstate moving over, speeding up, or slowing down a bit. So why on earth do people creep down the on ramp and merge into 65 mph traffic at 35-45 mph??? I’m sure a few of them had to clean the chocolate stains out of their shorts when they look in the rear view mirror and see a 8000# truck pulling a 3500# trailer load doing 60 mph and gaining speed, just to hit horn and slam on the breaks. Believe it or not, the engineers at the DOT gave you plenty of distance to get the rubber band wound up tight enough to get your prius up to legal speed.
2. Exiting the interstate. I try to be a good driver and not hog the left lane when I’m driving below the average speed of the wolf pack. So often when pulling a trailer, I’m in the right lane and I fully understand that there will be people driving below 65 mph. Impeding traffic is more than 10 under, so if I need to get around someone driving 55, I’m ok with that. But why do people hit their brakes and slow down to 45 (or slower) a half mile before the beginning of an off ramp. Again, the engineers at the DOT designed plenty of length on the off ramp so that you can decelerate your vehicle AFTER you exit. I’m baffled why people feel compelled to prematurely break because the exit is a mile away?????? Do these people not look in their rear view mirrors and see the 10 vehicles behind them breaking?? Then, I find myself laughing when they slowed to 35/40mph to “exit” then accelerate up the off ramp.
3. Was there something I missed in the Driver’s Ed class that taught people that they MUST pass any truck on the road that is pulling a trailer? I am amazed at the utmost loss of common sense when people need to pass me and immediately make a right turn. Lets see – 10 to 14 thousand pounds Vs 3000# if I wasn’t able to control my vehicle. The transfer of energy just might knock the common sense out of their , back through their head, and through the windshield. More hilarious is the guy or woman that thinks their Corolla is going to out accelerate my truck. At three car lengths behind me, I can see them flipping me off. Really??? Or are you just expressing you scored a 1 on your IQ test
Ok all better until I drive on the interstate in the morning
