Since there are none by my house, whatever is near the lake/river I am heading too. Which stinks, because it becomes a crapshoot.

I’ll give a thumbs up to to Jerry’s Bait in Mora. The River Minnows work like gold on Pike. River minnows are usually river chubs, but sometimes you get other things mixed into the batch.

Will have to remember to try the river blend next time we stop in there. Agree nice little bait shop.

Think stopping at a friendly bait shop is good for setting the mood of many a fishing trip. Used to make this a important part of taking the kids fishing. They loved looking over all the tackle on the ways and really liked checking out the minnow tanks. I know i did as a kid. Listened very closely to everything said in the bait shop hoping to pick up on some tidbit to put that big one on my line.

Moore’s Bait! Hands down. Too bad Bob had to close up shop. Still great to talk to him now and again though.

My REAL favorite bait shop is Minneopa Creek during the spring bullhead, sucker, chub runs. Nothing better than catching your own biat hand over fist on ultrlight gear with a monster carp or gar thrown in there to spice things up!

Freds in Deer river great selection of Minnows. Usually the last stop before we get to the cabin to stock up on what ever we forgot.

At home we trap our own bait but if an emergency the Holiday gas station in Hudson. Self serve and their bait seems to be very hardy plus they are really close to the boat landing. .

Well there is only one bait shop in my town, there used to be a lot but they all closed, the one I use is called Peter’s Bait and Tackle, and I am regular, which is sad when they know you by name…. the service is great and everyone is friendly, since I can easily go to a department store to get my tackle that I need for cheaper, they have also been long time sponsors for our local kids derbies and charity derbies.

My favorite is the Big Marine Lake store. They open early (5am) and stay open late every day and are right up the road from my house. Fish Lake in Harris is also tops if I’m heading up that way.

For the Mille Lacs area, I really like Rod’s bait and tackle in Isle. Rod is a humble and honest guy that has a lot of good info before hitting the lake. He’s really one of the good guys.

How can you not trust a guy named Rod in a bait shop?

I like Corkys in Rockville for local around home and Portside in Isle for the Pond (they guarantee their minnows to catch fish….or die trying)

Not sure I’ve ever met a bait shop I didn’t like… A couple ones that stand out is Bayshore at the north end of lil’ bays de noc (wow for crankbaits). Happy Hooker on Erie had a sick number of cranks and blades for sale. And then there’s Eds Bait at Devils lake…

    Depending where I’m at:

    Mag Store
    A & H
    Everets
    4-seasons.

My all time favorite was a self serve shop just south of Baldwin. Could get bait at all hours of day. But some a-holes had to wreck it for the rest.

We have it darn good in our area here on pool 4 and the metro, millelacs, LOW, etc. Spoiled rotten compared to what we had access to in sw wi years ago. If you wanted bait, you seined your own minnows or dug your worms and picked crawlers on rainy nites.Kudos to the shops mentioned!

Bob’s Bait & Tackle(French Island Bait & Tackle)in La Crosse, WI Scott(owner) is a pretty good guy. Only downside to the operation is, he doesn’t sell licenses. The other good bait shop in the area is between La Crosse and Holmen on Hwy. OT. It’s called Emma’s bait shop, which is right next to Emma’s Diner. The same people own both and both are real good(the owners and each place). Can’t beat it. Get breakfast and than go next door and get some fish food. Go right down the road and get on the ice or launch your boat.

Its always great when you got a bait shop that is combined with something else as to eliminate a additional stop or 2 on the way to the water. Bait and breakfast is great. Bait, food, beer and fuel is heaven. Been a while since I have seen one with all four.
