Because it was our first open water shoot?
All I’ll say is “what a fishery” and let the video say the rest!
February 17, 2013 at 4:55 pm #1142809James, I gotta say that everything you guys said in that show was absolutely true. You start to get the giggles when you get into a big school of pigs. You also get sick of netting 25″ walleyes! It’s almost like a waste of time!
The funny thing is that I bought $50 worth of Moxies online yesterday.

10-4 on that! And that’s why we just started hand lifting them. If you lost a 28″ fish… no biggie. Make a couple more casts and catch another. Not many places you can say that!
February 17, 2013 at 5:00 pm #1142811Great show, it’s definitely not helping with the itch right now.
Off to the garage to sit in my boat…
jmewelterPosts: 12February 17, 2013 at 5:27 pm #1142815Wow what a video, being New to this website I am absolutely addicted now. Can’t believe I just now found it. You guys are great and share great tips and advice. And true this does intensify the itch! Look forward to hitting red wing a few times this spring with ol bucktail wayne. Hope to see some of u out there
February 17, 2013 at 6:50 pm #1142835How would you rank last year’s bite to previous? For me, number and size were phenomenal. Specifically the last 2 days of the season. I made another trip to follow the ice out into the lake and didn’t do as well.
Also, on my second trip, I didn’t catch one fish on live bait. It wasn’t for lack of trying. It seemed that visibility of your lure was key, and color didn’t matter. You can see they were crushing our baits as well.
February 17, 2013 at 6:53 pm #1142837I have never done this trip to rainy before….I REALLY want to this year!
These shows rock. No better show for serious fishermen IMO!February 17, 2013 at 7:31 pm #1142845I have’t fished the Rainy is years, I’m going back this year. I know everything depends on the weather, but would the first week of April be a good time to go? Any tips on where to stay? I’m thinking a mid week trip.

It’s always a wait and see game. With this years thick ice and deeper snow, it could be close to get it in before the season closes.
I would suggest mid-week fishing every year if it works out. There have been a few years where the ice only moved past Frontier on the final day of the season. Not a lot of room out there when that happens.
I’m aiming for the final few days myself. If you can be flexible, you have a better shot of hitting it at the peak.
February 17, 2013 at 7:56 pm #1142850The season runs until the 15th correct? You’re suggesting I wait a week then?
February 17, 2013 at 8:38 pm #1142856I’m not sure if the date is set yet, but I would guess the 14th is the last day.
Most of all, try and be flexible and keep the Internet reports nearby. I usually go when the ice goes out, but I’ve done the best when the fishing reports get good. 100+ fish days.
I don’t want to suggest any dates at this point. Overall, this is just part of the mystique.
February 17, 2013 at 9:59 pm #1142867for someone who has never been there where do you put in? I goggled earth it and it is a long river. Are you fishing the river close to the lake? Any pointers would be appreciated.
February 17, 2013 at 10:09 pm #1142872Also where are some good palces to stay???? eat??? bait shops???
thank you

nhammInactiveRobbinsdalePosts: 7348February 17, 2013 at 10:27 pm #1142876I am going to have wonderful dreams for the next week after that video, thank you!!
February 17, 2013 at 10:42 pm #1142881Last year was the best rainy bite in the past 13 years, simply because that is how long I have been going and last year was unreal! Best bite in a long time most likely due to excellent weather and no shore ice! Going to be interesting with more snow and ice this winter. The thaw may be delayed and the bite could be short window well into April!
Guess we will wait and see! Great show again!
February 17, 2013 at 11:07 pm #1142884Thanks,James. That show was just what I needed to prod me into a trolling motor repair I’d been putting off since the boat was last wet around Christmas.
In fact,I watched half the show, paused it,then went out and removed the defective plug. It’s now in my truck. I’ll replace it tomorrow.
February 18, 2013 at 12:32 am #1142900James, another fine show. That Granrud guy seems to be on the fish all te time. Minnesota, Louisiana wherever he goes. Nice show guys.
February 18, 2013 at 12:36 am #1142901Most definately the best year I’ve had in 10+ years of going up. The number of large fish present was AWESOME.
The mild weather last year along with lack of snow and runoff had something do with it, the late part of the season was perfect, things came together great.
Sure am glad I was able to cash in last year, we’ll see what this year brings. Thanks for the great show!

Those weren’t fish that Chris had found prior to this shoot. I don’t think he had ever fished that area before. But that’s what makes the Rainy such a great destination. Chris and I show up every other year or so to fish together on the Rainy and put our heads together and see what we can find. Typically those fish make us look a lot better than we really are! Point being anyone can catch fish on the Rainy. You might not keelhaul one big fish after another but you’d have to spend all day in the parking lot to find a way to not catch a few on accident.
February 18, 2013 at 12:45 am #1142906I watched the video a couple of times and one thing jumps out at me it appears the rods you are using is a lot longer rod than I own. What are you using for rods?

6’8″ St. Croix Extreme for me and I believe Chris was using a 6’10” G.Loomis NRX. When fishing jigs I don’t usually use anything shorter than 6’8″.
Chris HPosts: 143February 18, 2013 at 12:57 am #1142910The rainy river is such a great fishery, there are not many places like it. One week you can catch a 30in Walleye the next a 70 year old Sturgeon.
James I really liked the show you guys did in the past on the rainy targeting sturgeon. I would love to see another episode someday!
Keep up the good work!

Count on it. One of IDO’s newest employes, Ben Brettingen, is a bit of a sturgeon guy early season before morphing into a muskie nut after the opener. He made me promise we were going to do a sturgeon show this spring… and a promise is a promise.
