EBT, et al

Today – I was running errands and had to go to Rainbow Foods, Cub Foods (they didn’t have something that I needed and Rainbow) and finally Sam’s Club for diapers, etc. I had a stop at the ATM and Home Depot mixed in….

Anyway – at each food related stop – I was behind a person paying with an EBT card.

On the way home, I heard an ad on the radio for Cell Phone Plan if you didn’t have any money. Lastly, I heard an ad for Heat bill assistance.

I guess I am wondering – if you did not work, can you actually live and not have to pay for anything? Seems like you just might be able to get along. I am sure there are plans for gas, transportation, housing, clothes, medical, dental, etc.

    Curious.

New version of food stamps. Instead of paper like it use to be they have what’s like a debt card (no, I’m not on it but have been stuck in line behind some that use it).

do you live with your head in the sand??? the things you listed have been handed out for years and years. it is a secret society that has special membership. if you pay any kind of federal taxes, you contribute to the fund that those special people get paid from.

Probably own a nice boat and truck to pull it with, and on the water while the rest of us are working to pay for our rigs!

And to answer the original question: It sure seems to be becoming easier and easier that’s for sure!!

Now…I understand that they likely don’t get to go fishing from a boat, fly to Cabo to fish, eat out at a high end steak place, drink good booze, etc.

However, I found it very interesting that each time – the person appeared to be able bodied, fit and intelligent enough to be able to get to the grocery store, pick out the food, get to the check out lane and pay with the EBT card.

What I am driving at is – what is the equivalent salary level – pre tax – if you added up all the benefits (assuming you knew how to make the system work for you)?

Welfare, Unemployment, EBT, Medical, Dental, Cell Phone, Utility Assistance, Child Assistance, Housing, et al. I have no idea where the end of the line is.

It has to be a pretty good number.

I am actually very interested in this number….

How long would this take to research?

CFDA contains detailed program descriptions for 2,195 Federal assistance programs. The following chart shows the program distribution for the top five issuing agencies.

I work in a grocery store. I see it all people who are proud to be lifers and ones that are embarrassed to use them.

1st part of every month the balance is added and the spending is mostly used up early in the month. That is why you are seeing it so common today.

You really should think twice about getting upset about someone having the EBT card. When you need some help you will cry that you deserve it. I know plenty of working people who just plain do not earn enough money.

I would bet money there are a number of people reading this that do use EBT.

Here is the State of MN –

The Department of Human Services is committed to giving Minnesotans the best possible value for their public dollars,” said Commissioner Lucinda Jesson. “The dashboard is one easy way for Minnesotans to check on both our priorities and our progress.

Hmmm – Priorities and Progress – interesting use of language.

I sure hope there isnt anyone reading this who is on assistance because if you can afford to have internet access you dont deserve assistance.

I have no issue with our tax dollars used to help people out that are down and out – and need of a safety net.

I just am interested in what the equivalent salary level is for someone that really knows how to “game” the system and take as much as they possibly can – while not lifting a finger – except to fill out the requisite paperwork.

Not true – you are eligible for a minimum amount of text and cell phone usage under a plan that I heard about on the radio today.

I am sure there is a plan for internet and computers. There has to be –

There is abuse and it is sad to see it.

I wish it would be revamped to tell you what foods you can buy like WIC. At one time my family did qualify for that and I feel that is a better system. You meet the workers and they give you vouchers for specific items and you can not get pop or ice cream or lobster tails with that.

Just wanted to point out it is legitimate for many that are on EBT.

I agree with helping people who need it,but, In my opinion, help includes; food water and shelter, not extras such as cell phones and internet, but thats just my opinion

I will give you my favorite sign of program abuse!!! DOGS!!! I am all ok with dog and pet ownership. I have had house dogs and hunting dogs for 30 plus years.

I remember a few years back being in the grocery store where I grew up and a lady was refused purchase of DOG FOOD using her ebt card. SHE WENT TO THE MEAT COUNTER AND BOUGHT HAMBURGER TO FEED HER DOG AND LAUGHED ALL THE WAY TO HER CAR!!!!

It’s a shame what society finds as acceptable.

Ask northside Minneapolis, heard this summer that 80% is on some type of government assistance……80%!!!!

Now don’t get me wrong I do beleive poverty for the most part is a systematic problem but c’mon, the numbers of people on them are getting ridiculous.

The number of people on it is ridiculous but not as ridiculous as the # of people working on trying to get off the assistance

This is the life these people know how to lkive and unfortunately we’ll be paying for it all of our and their lives

This is bad enough, but take a hard look at our prison systems, TV, internet, medical, dental, exercise rooms, 3 squares, and a roof, and all you have to to do is steal or kill someone to get it.

They should all be doing HARD Time not leisure time. This country is going to hell in a hand basket. I pray for my kids and my grandkids, they are the ones that will be paying all of their lives for others to have.

It’s just one of the many things we need to “fix”. All my life I saw/heard the stories of people that were professionally double-dipping in the system. Collected in IL, then drove their Caddy up to WI (typically Racine/Kenosha area) got their other checks from a PO Box, and laughed their way back down to the border. Its too bad that so many do abuse and take advantage of the system. Just don’t forget that there are those out there that just need a short term helping hand as the program was intended. I have no problem helping someone in need of help, or as my mother always says “capable of helping themselves”. Its the long term abuse and making a living out of it that is ruining what it was intended for.

My main problem with EBT and other benefits is that our poor have several flat screens, cable TV, cell phones, cars and few look like they are struggling to eat.

America’s poor are rich by the world’s standards. The real tragedy is that this gives them little incentive to work harder to benefit themselves. There is a big gap between what you get for doing nothing and how hard you will have to work to live a better life.

Those of us that work are looking more and more like chumps every day.

Who should we be madder at ???

About $59 billion is spent on traditional social welfare programs. $92 billion is spent on corporate subsidies.

I find it hard to believe that people are targeting and demonizing the poor. I can only imagine that people were on assistance prior to the economic collapse. Isn’t this mess a result of corporate greed and not assistance programs abuse? Fact is any great nation takes care of its own, welfare was started by the Romans. We cannot use our own successes as a benchmark to alienate others that either lost opportunity during the collapse or have none as a result.
