Well Mine is taking a crap. I am eligible for an upgrade through Verizon and I am moving up to a Smart Phone. They do offer a number of different “free” smart phones. Now to decide which one? And why.
Anyone willing to offer some direction and why I should pick a certain style phone? I would like one where I can use it for internet. I have also seen people using their phone for GPS. Would also like one that is outdoor and abuse friendly. Thanks.

I have an android phone the galaxy s. I use it for just what u said. i’m sure any smartphone will work and as far as outdoor friendly…. I don’t think anything touchscreen is outdoor friendly however just buy a nice case and you’ll be just fine.

I have the Droid Commando. It is a mil spec phone. I am a carpenter by trade and this phone has survived almost 2 years of daily abuse. It is a company phone, we were given 2 options; the I phone or the Droid commando, I chose the Droid because of the durability, most of the project managers chose the I phone. I think the I phone is great but not nearly as durable as the commando. Hope this helps.

Have a Samsung Stratophere. Not the best of the best but has been a good reliable droid that does everything I need and doesn’t blow the budget.

Droid Razr M. Good battery life, internet is faster than my qwest at home, and corning glass so less breakage. x2 on getting the otter case, expensive but worth it.

I love my Galaxy S3. Its a bigger screen which turns some people off, but its got everything your need.

The glass is a lot more durable than the first generation Droid I had. I didn’t bother putting on a protector because I like the feel of the glass and heard the new Gorilla glass was very scratch resistant. I have 2 very tiny nicks and a few very feint scratches.

I am making it sound worse than it is. The deal is you would never notice them. You can’t see them with the screen on. And you can barely see them if you angle it just right. I’ve taken it everywhere including the boat. As long as you don’t throw the phone in the pocket with your keys all the time, it is very durable.

You can get the iphone 4 for 30 bucks with a Verizon upgrade. I like mine so far especially with the navionics app.

keep in mind, verizon no longer has unlimited data, if you’re using it for gps, its using data.

You are partially right. GPS does not use data. It works exactly like a normal GPS. However, because a phone can also try and determine your location through a network (data/internet). Anyone not on unlimited should go into settings/location services and uncheck everything except stand alone GPS service, especially when using Navionics, because Navionics constantly checks for your location when it is running.

Heads up. Just heard Verizon is not going to carry the 32GB S3. They will continue to carry the 16GB. I am currently using 22GB of my 32GB internal storage. Also, since Jellybean, manually moving an app to the SD card is no longer an option.

I love my iphone, but I’ve never had an android device.

The biggest factor for me is the durability. There is an Android device that is “ruggedized” (I think it is the commando). I got the the lifeproof case for my iphone, and it has been great. I can literally take in the pool. They are going to make a lifeproof case for the galaxy III s, but I don’t know when it will hit the market. You can buy lifeproof at best buy or at lifeproof.com.

What ever phone you get buy a good case for it. Buy the case online, not where you get the phone. That will save you over half on the price of the case.
I have a Galaxy SIII and the Otter Defender case. It is a bit bulky with the case. On the other hand I am hard on a phone…it has been dropped numerous times and I almost always carry it in my pants pocket and the case it worth the money (~$22) the way I use and abuse the phone.

Just curious. I know a lot of people refer to the operating system as “droid” instead of Android. So I was just curious what you actually ended up with. The Razr is a fine phone.
