Of course, IF the Tribal regime is allowed to net during the spawn, nothing changes for them…

At this rate, per the laws that are in place now, the sport fishing season could or would have to be closed by mid-summer–if it (the harvest including hooking mortality) is as good as it has been the past two years.

Mille Lacs and the entire tribal thing makes me happy that my time is spent on Rainy Lake.

Seems messy and not worth the energy to fight the Indians all the time. I just stay away from their casinos and fish elsewhere.

I have yet to run into 1 Indian and “fight” them I don’t go to casinos, but enjoy fishing Mille Lacs. The potential fighting happens in Late April to early May and by the opener, 90% of the “Native” netters are back in Wisconsin I don’t think you can Walleye fish Rainy that early either Ignoring the issues will not make them any better

    edit –

    “Fight”

Replace with ” complain about their legally obtained rights to net fish out of season while the rest of use have to sit on shore and count the days until fishing opener “

    Sorry.

    1 more cent.

G – I think you would know better that to speculate that I ignore any issue that I find compelling.

Mille Lacs and its problems are worth avoiding – but that is just me. I find it to be an ugly place, ugly shoreline, poorly maintained properties and lots of self absorbed drunks. Ask a CO where most of the fishing related DUI’s come from and where is the most crime at the public boat launches. I’ll pass – thank you.

That is not the case on many of our other wonderful lakes and parks.

If I want to fish Utopia, I go right by Rainy, about 900 miles north. Brisebois scenery makes any lakes shoreline in this state look like a slum and makes the fishing here (including Rainy) seem poor at best There is always “better” places but it should not make anyone “happy” to have a resource such as Mille Lacs to avoid

    900 Miles North? Why?

You clearly have not fished Rainy properly – might I suggest a guide trip. You would be back – year over year. And – you can run your own craft.

Life for me is about time well spent. For others, it is a different level of quality of life – I understand that.

I am judging and it is my opinion Mille Lacs and surrounding area is “the armpit” of our Minnesota lakes reputation.

Take a drive on the ice – now. Garbage everywhere placed by people that must live like that – all the time. It is the same level of filth at most of the “resorts” when you drive around the lake. I have.

    Now I don’t.

    My choice.

If you can’t understand there are much better lakes 900 miles north of Rainy, I can’t help that I look at a lake with very little Snobs with mansions living on it as a plus to me, but that’s just me. Go cruise Tonka if that floats your boat Maybe Mille Lacs is not the lake for elitists, I can see that As far as DWI/BWI’s, I also suspect that there is more crime in Mpls than there is in Internatonal Falls… imagine that !!! it’s a numbers game

(I know exactly the type of person who leaves trash on the ice, I have seen them and it isn’t the guy with a place on the lake. Moreover it’s the once a year weekend warrior who thinks that he is above it all)

As long as the Indians don’t net any smallmouth I’m OK with it. To face facts on Mille Lacs right now, it is turning into a better bass/muskie lake and less of a walleye lake. Same thing happened on Rainy when the Canucks netted out a large chunk of walleyes on their side.

Considering the tribes ruined Red Lake once already and the MN DNr re-ruined it by trading an exceptional crappie fishery for another MN walleye fishery. Maybe you are onto something. MN could use some more/better Smallie and Musky lakes.

    hi Steve
mind stagering change for much lower levels than the past. Will be interesting watching the outcomes during the year. I don’t get to ML but maybe 5-7 times during the year, but always enjoy it.
Hope the fishery can be protected some day….

sounds like you are discribing minneapolis. over the last ten years, i have had to deal with way more drunks while in minneapolis than here in the “armpit”, and i live within a sandwedge of a bar. i was on a 15 mile round tripper yesterday, and went through several fishhouse communities and i did not see the trash that you speak of. i am not saying that there isn’t any littering up here, just not anymore than on any lake around the cities. i think you are just sturing the pot, and if not, come on up here and stay for a few years and see if your point of view will change.

Not only is this statement completely uninformed and BS but exactly how is it relevant to the fishing regulation discussion?

Mille Lacs is the most popular fishing lake in MN so basically what you’re trying to say here is “MN anglers are a bunch of dirty slobs who give our state a bad name”. Is that correct?

Yeah, what a cesspool of armpit stench Mille Lacs is. No pride of ownership here. Look at the ugly shorline and all the drunks wondering around.

    Grouse Dog,

Honestly its pleasant to look at but a well manicured lawn leading up to a shoreline of a lake rather ugly and irresponsible if we are talking about responsible management of a fishery and the lakes Eco system.

Not to credible to pick and choose what practices one wants to fallow as for fish management.

My inlaws dump pure liquid nitrogen into the lake to keep the zeebs off the dock and lifts….Grade of land runs AWAY from the lake. Good grief, I give up.

PLEASE, ALL people, keep thinking that Mille Lacs is comparable to a nuclear waste land, and stay the [censored] AWAY.

    Grouse Dog,

I wish I was sitting at that table drinking a cold one right now! That being said, my parents have a cabin on a lake, and they do keep a buffer zone next to the shoreline where the plants aren’t cut/trimmed to help with runoff into the lake. I always think it’s so weird when yards on Tonka and other metro lakes are trimmed and manicured straight to the shoreline. Personally if I hit the lottery and bought a large chunk of shoreline on a prime lake in MN, I would let things grow naturally. Get a boundary waters look going. Why mow a lawn right to the edge of a natural lake???

I think that should be National Law. All of my families properties have buffer zones. They do not impact negatively at all.

Geese, can’t take a complement much?
As for visiting Mille Lacs it has always been a drive by on the way up to Sand Lake where we have a 100 ft buffer zone of woods between the cabin and the lake with just enough woods cleared away to park and turn the boat and trailers around. From the lake you cant even tell there is a cabin there.
Though we do have to deal with some rules like a no wake on the bowstring river to protect the wild rice for the Indians but I’m not complaining it keeps the traffic down going by our cabin.
