As someone who has a younger mentally handicapped brother, that video was pretty cool to watch. My brother, now 48, was in the Special Olympics when he was 9 years old when we lived in California. We knew he was going to be in a relay race and another event but didn’t know which one.
Turned out he was in the “Standing Broad Jump.” We didn’t even know he could jump. He came out to the middle of the stadium in front of a huge crowd (its a very big event in Calif), looked down, set his feet, pumped his arms back and leaped for what seemed like an eternity through the air. We were the most surprised people there. Jon sailed through the air for a distance never achieved before for his age group in the Special Olympics. Its still a standing record today for that age group over 30 years later.
I don’t think he has jumped ever since…probably never felt the need to. But hearing the crowd roar for Owen in the video brought back a great memory…
